Double-Edged Sword of Global Warming: Saving Lives from Cold but at a Deadly Cost

IMO Elon will put a huge space station in orbit where all the rich people can live till the poor people die out, or perhaps he'll build a big underground facility where all the rich can hibernate. For a name of the corporation I think Umbrella would be quite nifty.

I've seen that movie.  Think it was called Elysium.   But it was just a movie.  It was made before Musk bought Twitter and everyone loved him as he was making electric cars, neuro-links to help the disabled, putting satellites in space to make communication possible for everyone in the world and talking about alternative planets humans could live on.  Then he bought a social media network as he believes in the concept of free speech (which everyone told him was a waste of money and would fail) and here we are. Now people who cannot abide the concept of free speech think he is a Nazi or worse, despite the worst people in the world being against free speech.   Fascinating.

Given that developed countries have much higher energy use per capita than undeveloped countries, perhaps we could send the millions of illegal immigrants in developed countries back to the largely undeveloped countries that they came from? We could also reduce future immigration quotas in the more developed countries?

That would reduce energy use globally.

Win Win.

I'd love it if for once they actually said WHAT immediate and aggressive action IS. I have no clue as they never say what they mean.

IMO that's because they don't actually know, and just do what seems like it might work, but if it doesn't no one can say they told us porkies.

Well, one the actions they take now is reclassifying it from global warming to climate change. Now that covers changes in both directions so whatever happens - they were right.....

One of the first things I learned out of college doing modeling on one of the fastest supercomputers of the day is that tweaking even minute variables can make a huge swing in the results.  I also learned that modelers don't get to keep their jobs if their results don't meet the funders' wishes, and that most jobs and promotions went not to the most accurate modelers, but the most convincing.

If cold deaths today outstrip heat deaths by 10:1, I don't think that warming things up a few degrees will result in more net deaths.  That doesn't pass the sniff test.

It's a good thing that most of the people in the world live in Europe,  and only a few in underpopulated areas like India, Indonesia, the countries of Southeast Asia, and most of Africa. Because if it was the case otherwise...

Heat is more deadly than cold, in some situations.

If the heat and humidity combine to create a high enough "wet bulb temp" then humans and animals cannot regulate their core temps and start to die rapidly from heat stroke.  Cooling someone down in that situation is quite hard, and very hard if its affecting lots of people, which it would be.

If you are too cold, you can easily wear layers of clothing and with modern fabrics it doesn't even need to be a crazy thick layers. Several thin layers will keep your body heat in and bu eating and exercising you can make your body generate heat.  The trick is not to lose it to the environment.

just reading the climate change deniers on this thread gives you a good impression of their shortcomings - they clack a basic understanding of MMCC - eve trying to argue about what to call it, and cling to simplistic interpretations thinking they. are the only ones who have noticed and and cherry-pick anomalies without realising that this makes them look even more out of touch and lack the skills to either understand or argue against.

They need to watch this video by John Cleese on being stupid -

You cannot help but know far more about noodles than Trump knows about Science.

This is totally true.

Trump, for all his other accomplishments, has very little understanding of science, either Natural Sciences or Social Sciences.

Although, he might know something about unnatural science....for even ....

Weird Science.....

(Such a classic!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Experts believe up to 70 percent of the predicted deaths could be prevented with rapid interventions, such as expanding green spaces, implementing early warning systems, and redesigning urban environments to cope with rising temperatures. Garyfallos Konstantinoudis, a lecturer at Imperial College London, highlighted the importance of these measures: "Previous estimates based on historical data have suggested that for every heat-related death, there are roughly 10 cold-related deaths."

Experts BEIEVE. Yea Right They just Don' Know.

One Can't Fight Nature.   Nature looks after itself  Done that since year Dot. . Getting cooler/getting Warmer than Cooler Again. Some cycles are  happening Quicker than others. Maybe that's Natures way to Balance things

Oh , How did they Become Experts have they been around That Long? 😇

Perhaps you should look at South Australia, 70% renewable energy now, projected to be 100% by 2030. Or the work done by CSIRO in making hydrogen a viable alternative to fossil fuels, using ammonia as the transport medium.

The fossil fuel industry is fighting a rear-guard action, aided and abetted by a guy in the White House who knows as much about climate science as I know about string theory. You are one of the guys who vocally supported him, so it's a self-inflicted wound.

But you still have the effrontery to ask for solutions, when you are part of the problem. Chutzpah.

I've been promoting hydrogen on this forum for years, but I guess you missed all those posts.

As for me being part of the problem, you know nothing about me but you have the gall to suggest that you do.

I did the best thing anyone can do to solve the problem by not having children. How many little environmental destroyers have you brought into the world?

aided and abetted by a guy in the White House who knows as much about climate science as I know about string theory.

You really are a hoot! Tell us how much Biden or his cackling intended replacement know about climate science. Biden thought dead people were still alive, and was unable to function without a teleprompter, so I doubt he knows much about anything these days

You are apparently still butt hurt about Trump winning to be bringing such nonsense into the discussion.

But you still have the effrontery to ask for solutions, when you are part of the problem.

In other words you don't have any affordable, effective and acceptable solutions, so resort to the usual deflection and personal insults.

Tell us how much India is doing to "combat ( LOL )" climate change. :coffee1:

Yes, I had posted about that a while ago. The term "man made climate change" has vanished from the media, and it's just "climate change" now. I guess when it was obvious that it was a nonsense they decided to drop it and hope no one noticed.

I continue to marvel at the determination of some posters to bury their heads in the sand.

There are areas in many countries which will only be inhabited by people who are rich enough to self-insure, the average person won't be able to afford property insurance, or it simply won't be on offer.

Most of the world don't use insurance, it's a western financial scam.

Along with the artificially high western ponzi property prices.

No insurance on my house either, waste of money.

A)  If it was one of the first things I learned, isn't that an indication that a lot of people know that?  The more important part of my statement is that running accurate models isn't the way to keep your job, get promoted and get your next "study" funded.  Publishing results that the funders like, is.  You get those results by tweaking minute variables.

B) How many computer models do you figure Cleese has run?

c) I'm staying right now where YouTube is blocked.  Though I do like John Cleese, alas it will be awhile before I can click the link.

Just relating my real world, been there, done that experience.  How many years did you run state of the art, complex computer models for a living?
