I read about a stupid Chinese woman who refused to use the overhead walkway on the Sukhumvit, crossing the road, getting hit.....bloody idiot. 

 

I negotiated the “under repair “ footway in Soi 23 Sukhumvit, Bangkok for nearly a year avoiding the holes and piles of rubble and paving stones in spite of the almost non-existent street lighting, until one night a crumbling slope tipped me into an electrical cabinet, splitting my head open requiring ten stitches.

 

Ironically,  the repairs were then completed within a month of my mishap but there are hundreds of km of similarly degraded, obstructed and crumbling footpaths in Bangkok alone.  How the blind or those in wheelchairs manage god only knows. But the government only cares about the rich, and they rarely walk.

The beachside promenade is very good but Pattaya would have benefited from seeing what Vietnam did in Da Nang - for example.

I find Pattaya now to be one enormous trip hazard. Lots of changes of levels, some quite high steps up to shops, pipes across the walkway, unexpected holes, and redundant iron work, as in the article photo. 
It wasn’t so bad when I first came here 33 years ago, but now I’m a doddery old git of 73, I have to be extremely careful when walking around town. Although, so much of Pattaya stinks so much I don’t venture out as often as I used to.

Sidewalk repair is the lowest priority of the repair crews that fix the streets in Thailand cities and towns.

 I have seen many places in Hua Hin, Jomtien Beach and south Pattaya that have existed for months.

  It seems that the repair crews deliberately avoid patching up the messes they have created. Corruption

is wide spread in Thailand. I do not expect anything to change sadly.

    Easily fixed by eliminating the parking on the shops side, widening the sidewalks, and adding shade trees--or making a covered walkway to provide shade and rain protection, lit festively at night.
