Bangkok-Pattaya Bus Overturns, 40 Injured

A bus travelling from Bangkok to Pattaya overturned on the bypass road (Highway 36) heading into Pattaya, leaving 40 people injured. Emergency responders rushed to the scene to assist those involved in the accident, which occurred at approximately 14:00 on 18 February.

 

The incident took place on the bypass road near the 1+800 – 1+900 kilometre mark in Nong Pla Lai, Bang Lamung District, Chonburi Province. The bus, operated by Rung Rueng Tour Company, was travelling from Bangkok to Pattaya when the driver lost control and it flipped onto its side, blocking two lanes of traffic.

 

The injured passengers, both Thai and foreign nationals, along with the driver, suffered various injuries, primarily bruises and minor cuts. Emergency crews, including medics and volunteers, quickly arrived at the scene, extracting the injured passengers from the wreckage. They were then provided with first aid and transported to nearby hospitals, including Bangkok-Pattaya Hospital and Bang Lamung Hospital, for further treatment. 
 

As the injured were being treated at the scene, a thunder storm hit the area and those passengers with minor injuries were put on a passing empty tour bus with medics and the bus transported them to the bus station, under an ambulance escort, for triage and either first aid or hospital treatment as required. According to initial reports, the bus driver was attempting to avoid a vehicle that suddenly cut in front of the bus after leaving a gas station. In trying to brake and swerve to avoid a collision, the bus lost control and overturned onto its side and sliding along the road. The road was wet, after the first rainfall in the area for sometime.

 

Authorities have collected evidence from the scene and are preparing to question the driver to determine the exact cause of the crash and proceed with any legal action.

Ohh dear just a few weeks ago I was on here saying they

"hardly ever crash or break down"   must have jinxed it !!

Hope people are ok but this sort of thing can lead to life changing injuries. We always wear the seat belt but few others do.

Some buses go down the 36 pass Regents, onto the Sukhumvit Road, to drop passengers off in Naklua.

I agree with that sentiment, the last few times I have used them I have been pleased that the driver was an older man who seemed to drive at reasonable speeds. I guess he was caught in the very heavy rainstorms we were having yesterday in the area.

They  pull into the NGV station there for a toilet break... prior to that route, used to be it was down sometimes Hwy 7 branch, on to Laem Chabang,  and then a few drop offs on Sukhunvit, like Rong Po Market. Not speaking the language well enough I  am never sure which way they go and I need to get dropped off somewhere near Rong Po.

More victims of Plod's laissez-faire policy on the roads.  They only ever work AFTER an event: then they'll consult CCTV to find who was responsible.  If they left their office & toured the streets they would ticket multiple offenders till the message about safety, got through.

I took this bus earlier from Pattaya, guy was driving a bit like a mini van driver, both seat belts didn't work and no emergency hammer glass breakers, risky journey, so they haven't learnt much since the accident.

 

the return much better, smooth careful driver, both safety belts worked and emergency hammers on each window.

 

Maybe wear a full face helmet just in case

Possibly the driver was cooked on a deadly combo of Red Bull and cigarettes - and maybe the Devil's parsley.

 

But the bigger question: Why a rainstorm in mid February? (dry season, supposedly)

I have never heard of accidents on this route for 20 years, normally very safe.  Happy to hear there were no serious injuries. Could have been a lot worse.
