Stepson Sets Stepfather on Fire in Uthai Thani After Argument Over Lost Mobile Phone
Picture courtesy of Khaosod. A 43-year-old man has been arrested in Uttaradit after allegedly dousing his stepfather with petrol and setting him on fire during a drunken argument. Police from Laplae Police Station responded to an emergency call at 19:20 on 9 April, reporting a serious assault at a home in Moo 3, Mae Phun Subdistrict, Laplae District. Upon arrival, officers found the alleged attacker, identified as Mr Kittisak being restrained by local residents. The injured victim, 72-year-old Mr Boonma, had already been rushed to Laplae Hospital by rescue volunteers suffering from severe burns. The single-storey concrete home bore signs of a fire, including burn marks on the linoleum flooring and traces of petrol. A petrol canister was found at the scene and taken in as evidence. According to police, the suspect admitted that he and his stepfather had a history of frequent disputes. On the night of the incident, both were drinking inside the house when Mr Boonma asked his stepson to look for his mobile phone. When Mr Kittisak was unable to find it, an argument broke out. Enraged, he reportedly grabbed a petrol canister meant for use on the family farm, poured it over his stepfather, and ignited it. In the struggle that followed, the flames also spread to Mr Kittisak, causing minor burns to his exposed skin. Neighbours, alerted by the victim’s screams, rushed in to help extinguish the flames and called emergency services. Mr Kittisak later tested positive for drugs and he has been charged with attempted murder and remains in police custody. The suspect confessed to the attack, saying he was angered not only by the request to search for the phone but also by his stepfather turning up the television volume during the argument. He expressed remorse, stating that he now regrets his actions but cannot undo what has been done. Police are continuing their investigation. -- 2025-04-10 -
