Report Massive Thai Drug Bust: 2,399kg Crystal Meth Seized
Picture courtesy of Bangkok Post In a major drug bust, Thai authorities have arrested eight suspects and seized a whopping 2,399 kilogrammes of crystal methamphetamine near Ban Laem Son pier in Rayong's Klaeng district. This haul, valued at approximately 1.5 billion baht, marks a significant interception in the fight against drug trafficking. The operation was orchestrated by the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) and the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB). Collaborating closely with the First Naval Region and Pak Nam Prasae police, they managed to intercept the shipment before it could be loaded onto a boat. In a detailed statement, Pol Capt Surawut Rangsai of the DSI explained that the drugs were cleverly concealed in waterproof packaging across six trucks and a pickup. These vehicles were set to rendezvous at the pier, a critical point in their route, when the police swooped in. Estimated at a street value of over 300 million baht domestically, the worth of these drugs skyrockets to 1.5 billion baht on the international market. This highlights the global dimension of such trafficking operations. The arrested individuals, all Thai nationals identified only by their first names as Sarawut, Thanayot, Chanyut, Chalong, Chatri, Teerayut, Somchai, and Somjit, are currently under investigation. Notably, during initial questioning, the boat captain denied knowledge of the illicit cargo, insisting he was merely a transporter. Other crew members claimed they were unaware labourers. Pol Capt Surawut elaborated on the trafficking route, indicating that these networks transport drugs from northern Thailand to the eastern seaboard using trucks. Interestingly, these vehicles had been under scrutiny during multiple checkpoints, aiding in their eventual interception. Currently, the ONCB is working to track financial transactions and investigate suspicious bank accounts linked to this network. Authorities suspect connections to a broader transnational drug syndicate operating across neighbouring borders. In light of this bust, officials are renewing efforts to dismantle such networks. They are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities, reinforcing a community effort against drug trafficking. Adapted by ASEAN Now from Bangkok Post 2025-06-23
