Thai Army Intervenes to Ease Temple Tensions at Thai-Cambodian Border

THAILAND - Following a renewed spat at the Prasat Ta Muen Thom temple on the Thai-Cambodian border, the Thai army is taking steps to quell any rising tensions stemming from these incidents.

 

Situated in the Phanom Dong Rak district of Surin province, Prasat Ta Muen Thom has become a focal point of contention between Thai and Cambodian nationals. Recently, a Thai tour guide clashed verbally with Cambodian soldiers, escalating tensions at this culturally significant site.

 

This altercation follows a previous incident where Cambodian soldiers were filmed singing their national anthem at the temple, a scene that subsequently went viral.

 

In the latest episode, Thai troops accompanying Bangkok tourists encountered friction when the guide broadcasted through a megaphone, describing the temple as lying on neutral ground, overseen by soldiers from both nations.

 

Cambodian soldiers objected to the use of the megaphone, prompting a heated exchange. Despite attempts by Thai soldiers to mediate, the situation nearly escalated into a physical confrontation, with clips of the incident rapidly circulating online.

To prevent future conflicts, the Suranaree Task Force has mandated that military guides accompany all Thai tourists visiting the temple, ensuring they receive accurate and sensitive briefings. Lt. Gen. Boonsin Phadklang, commander of the 2nd Army Region, has urged the public to refrain from sharing outdated clips that might incite further unrest.

 

Specifically, he addressed a video of Cambodian soldiers singing their national anthem, clarifying that it predates 2011 and does not reflect the current, more stable border relations.

 

Lt. Gen. Boonsin emphasised the importance of avoiding unnecessary provocations that could lead to severe consequences, including potential armed conflict. He stressed that residents along the border would be the most severely affected by any hostilities, underscoring the need for peace and understanding.

 

While tensions linger at Prasat Ta Muen Thom, the efforts by military authorities aim to maintain calm and prevent further escalation. By addressing misinformation and ensuring respectful exchanges, both nations hope to preserve the peace along this historically significant border, reported Thai Newsroom.

There are Khmer temples all along the border. The border issues happened because Thailand never used to draw maps while the former French colonists did, making arguments of who is right rather one sided.

So there it is. Thai megaphone technology is superior to the Cambodians. Saw a  helicopter heading towards the border a few days ago. Thought they had found someone burning a field, silly me.
