Key points about Isaan: Technically a dialect: Within Thailand, Isaan is officially classified as a "Northeastern Thai" dialect. Similar to Lao: Due to historical migration patterns, Isaan shares significant similarities with the Lao language. No official writing system: While written using the Thai alphabet, Isaan does not have a distinct writing system dedicated solely to it. Spoken in the Isaan region: This dialect is primarily spoken in the northeastern region of Thailand. Nice cut and paste, from an uncited source. Still incorrect. It's not referred to as "Isaan". That's the name if the region. There are many dialects in Isaan. Try going to Southern Isaan, especially the southern areas if Surin and Butiram, and tell the Khmer and Gui speakers their mother tongue is related to Lao language. Then go to Korat and ask them. Keep the engine running just in case.

It's a case of wanting to use it out of respect to the host nation. Many complain about all those pesky immigrants in English speaking countries that get accused of not embracing the language and culture. There are lots of non isolated places where knowledge of Thai helps leaps and bounds.

I have tried and tried, but my age (62 when I moved here) makes it almost impossible to learn. What I learn one day is gone the next. I guess there is some age when language comes easy and some age when it is next to impossible. I really would like to speak thai!
