A rescue worker in Rayong had a terrifying experience when the decomposing finger of a deceased man suddenly detached and struck her in the face during a body recovery operation.

The rescue team had been called to retrieve the body of Mr. Sarawut, 25, who was found hanging from the rafters of a house. His head was dangling downward, with his right hand gripping a roof beam and his left hand tightly clutching an electrical cable.

As the team discussed their plan to remove the body, the little finger of Mr. Sarawut’s left hand, which had fused to the wire, but due to decomposition the finger suddenly dropped off and hit a female rescue worker waiting below, full in the face. Startled, she let out a loud scream and ran from the building.

Police believe Mr. Sarawut died from electrocution while attempting to steal electrical wiring. A search of his body revealed wire-cutting tools and 205 baht in cash.

Local reported that he had recently claimed to have won a substantial sum in the national lottery on 1 March. Following his windfall, he had quit his job as a tradesman. Reports also suggest he also had a history of drug-related activity.

Authorities continue to investigate the incident.
