Sorry, English is not my first language.

My brother, sister and I were diagnosed with bipolar disorder 10+ years ago. I was the only one given antidepressant rather than mood stabilizer.  I was given Lexapro, Zoloft, Cymbalta, Effexor, Wellbutrin, Remeron, trazodone and none of them works. Depression causes me to stay in bedroom for about 10 months.

I am currently 37 and I believe my first hypomanic happened last December, when I worked long hours with less sleep. I was given Zyprexa for about a month, then come mixed episodes in February and currently depressive episode for the last 30 days. I am currently getting the same drug Lexapro, which gives me dizziness and nausea, so I gave up again. I am so tired being in bed all the time and I am scared that current depression will last as long as the last one.

I live in Phichit and travel to Bangkok often. Please recommend psychiatry in private hospital, especially one that keep trying new medication, Thank you for your help.

Kudos that you are willing to help yourself and try new meds, as it could only be one or two that can help, and you never know until you try them. Understand the problem very well, and have, and are trying to help some. The list of people I know that have or had it isn't a small one, as it includes family and friends, some very close. Good luck finding the right doctor. Some are fast prescribing yet won't follow up correctly. One here told a close friend, after he put her on Prozac, if they don't want to take medicine, they don't have to, which is true but they should be talking with her and finding out how her life's going and has been going, and if things don't improve, recommending trying an alternative medicine.

From my experience as a retired psychiatric nurse, you will need a combination of drugs.

It will be finding the right combination that works for you. Therefore I expect you will need monthly follow up appointments with the psychiatrist to monitor what’s effective.

Usually there is a mood stabiliser ( lithium carbonate has been used for decades and is the only drug that has been designed especially for bipolar); the others will be antipsychotic; anticonvulsants and a benzodiazepine which can be addictive so you will be advised on how often to use. Also ask for an emergency drug, one that you can take when you feel at your worst ; unable to get out of bed ; anxiety or other abnormal thoughts or feelings.

It would also help to see someone on a regular basis for support. A professional, eg psychologist.

Is bipolar disorder a real or made-up condition? Could it be a personality trait or a certain state of mind (mood)? It seems like a highly buzzed about condition in Western countries, but never spoken of, or even heard of, in others.

I was diagnosed - seen by nine different psychiatrists who confirmed it - with bipolar disorder, and I spent several years in psychiatric hospital.

Believing that it WAS really a disease, I spent many years taking medications until I got new insights, gradually (very carefully!) weaned myself off the meds using professional help, and found my own way with life, this earth and it's inhabitants. This was years ago. No symptoms or 'relapses' since.
I caught up and finished my education, I started working with clients and did many of the things the doctors told me I would never be able to do because of this 'illness'.
