This is just a short follow-up to my previous topic (linked below). Based on all the responses everyone gave, I’ve put together a list of the 10 most common reasons people spend time on the forum (trolling, flaming and bickering not included).

To get a clearer picture of the most significant driving factors, I’ve now created a simple poll where you can quickly vote for the reasons that resonate with you the most without having to restate what you already posted in detail earlier.

I’m curious to see what really motivates others and whether the reasons people keep coming back are much different from my own. Personally, I’d say it’s mostly boredom and habit in my case. Occasionally, I find it entertaining and somewhat interesting to hear other people’s opinions, but if I could keep myself fully occupied with other activities, that would probably take care of the boredom factor and might help to break the habit. However, based on some of the responses to my previous post, it seems that my reasons are not necessarily the same for others.

I’d appreciate it if you could take a moment to quickly and kindly cast your vote (you can select multiple reasons in the poll if you want to). I'm interested to get a better sense of what drives other people’s interests and see what percentage of other people's reasons might align with my own. Thank you.

Reasons People Spend Time on the Forum

1. What Are the Main Reasons You Spend Time on the Forum?

Boredom - Nothing else to do.

This I reckon is the winner, most of the guys who are glued to their AN screen are bored and penny less, nothing better to do, can't afford to go out and enjoy themselves, just sitting alone all day bashing other members with their hate comments.

the reason I am here is not listed.

News -  I come to read how thai society is going down the toilet more & more each day

You only feel that way because you read the forum too much, with people's warped interpretations of reality.

And of course there are rapists and murderers in the news, but they're only small minority.

yes,   most on here are 70, 80+ .. even 90 ....   and some of their answers lack common sense,  so age does fog the mind.

Boredom of course comes first BUT
everything or mostthings in life can become addictive plus the brain just loves repitition

Having closed off all my social media this is it
Although in a much more anonymus way.

so initially Visa advice
then it became an extension of the daily read of the news

To assume people are penniless is an arrogance
There are reward stimuli interactions that the brain is getting so for many they are no longer at home and even though you say you dont miss it, this forum is actually an extension to that connection of where you come from.
Dopamine Seratonin a wee emoji given or recieved

In some way lonliness could also be part of that
I ticked about 4 boxes because no single reason is enough to justify any interaction here, iit's far more complex
So in many ways we are no different from sad influencers who need some form of validation, we just get it with an emoji or a reply that affirmates our opinions.
If you watch porn on the internet its also a form of addiction

Creatures of habit
and one of the lesser forms of addiction that is  least harmful unless your posts are always hateful.

Now and then also to help, I have sorted two members IT problems which is rewarding

How do you know you are not messing with your own?

You could have added a bonus option on your list for a our most-pedantic, argumentative, can-never-be-wrong Scouse member!

sounds like a trick question.

For me I read it the first time and saw a lot of confusion, a lot of anxiety, and a lot of false information.

So I saw it as a calling to help out those who are not on top of all things Thailand as what I am.

That I receive many private messages thanking me everyday in my inbox is what keeps me going.

I do get the odd criticism but I just ignore them.

For me it's because my wife ran off with her brother and i have no friends.

I also saw it as a calling.

Many people on here need help with their grammar because they are not as proficient in the English language … “ as what i am “ !

Well, that is right Andrew and is why you are among the top three most respected contributors on this forum.

And the smartest by a long way.

How about another option:

Here on the forum because communication with Thai wife/partner leaves you unfulfilled?

Vibrant discussions here because similar conversations are lacking at home?

I'm not saying it's a good or bad thing, but just wondering who would admit to it?

It's already provided for free by AN. It's the leaderboard showing the most active 5 posters during the last 7 days on every page of the site.

What about "Has no Thai wife/partner so thrives on speaking with other angry, drunk, broke, old men?"

Are your thai language skills up for such conversations?

If not it must be hard on your wife.

The character Sheldon on "Big Bang Theory" was arguing at the Department of Motor Vehicles that their test questions were incorrect. His friends tried to discourage him.

He said "How else are they going to learn?".

This is how I feel when "correcting" AN members.

"How else are they going to learn?".

So I guess you could say I participate for humanitarian reasons.

I post an average of 1.4 posts per day, which I think reflects badly on my ability to find constructive activities. When I see that some post close to 100 times per day I think there must be something wrong with them.

You missed out what is apparently a very common reason to visit this forum: trolling....

Finally some introspection from you.  Maybe now that you've admitted your problem, you can take steps to address it

Ha ha, good try turning it around.

It's you I'm talking about.
