Opinion piece from the NYT contrasting US approach and Chinese approach to technology etc.

Interesting, although the prediction of China's ascendancy has been made before without it materializing.

"It’s downright scary to watch this close up. President Trump is focused on what teams American transgender athletes can race on, and China is focused on transforming its factories with A.I. so it can outrace all our factories. Trump’s “Liberation Day” strategy is to double down on tariffs while gutting our national scientific institutions and work force that spur U.S. innovation. China’s liberation strategy is to open more research campuses and double down on A.I.-driven innovation to be permanently liberated from Trump’s tariffs."

https://www.nytimes.com/2025/04/02/opinion/trump-tariffs-china.html

Chinese products never seemed competitive to me in the past.

It seemed like Chinese business hadn't gotten past the mindset of trying to win by cutting corners rather than outperforming their

competition. I don't remember seeing Chinese products that seemed superior.

Maybe I was just prejudiced but Huawei's offerings always seemed like also-rans to me.

I have recently ridden in a few Chinese automobiles which on first inspection seem to be quality vehicles.

Have some BYD Seal owners on AN I think and it seems like a winner.

The Chinese AI platform is apparently a shiny new object among the many AI apps.

Has Chinese technology turned a corner?

The article is a very interesting discussion of what is happening in Chinese technology.

I think it's going to be more matter of America sinking than China rising. I guess relatively speaking the results will look the same as far as comparative economic strength goes. But China has its own huge economic problems which it'dresolutely not facing. Under Xi huge resources are being diverted to maintaining failing government enterprises which now constitute once again the majority of the economy.

I don't think it's possible, i think it's inevitable. Despite China's problems they're in much better shape and a long term policy.

China insiders are well aware of China's worsening economic problems.  BRI has turned out to be an expensive adventure that has used debt trap diplomacy to expand its over capacity construction industry outside of the country.  An industry that relied heavily on the collapsing real property sector.  Potential BRI participants are not falling for that con.

Many fall for the CCP propaganda about a booming Chinese economy.  Recently there has more and more revelations by MSM that China is not living up to that hype.  Sooner or later China will pay the price for a managed economy.

Basically I agree with you. But all  economies are managed to some extent. China's economy is way over managed. Like most dictators, Xi is a control freak.

this is fake news.

the US and China BOTH are the heaviest investors in AI.

Tesla just came out with the most sophisticated smart watch, surpassing the Apple watch.

It can predict heart attacks one hour before they occur.

So the US came out with it before China, but it will be a stiff competition.

FRom what I can gather from my new Xiaomi phone they are upping their game
The phones are quality for a low price

that price is offset with bloatware

7 versions ago you could all but strip it clean
now its far more difficult there are more things embedded integrated with google software makes it harder to clean out.

When OBAMA stopped XEON CPUs going to China to delay their supercomputer progression
I wrote how stupid that was China already had quad core Snapdragons for the phones
Now XEONs are good for that a lot more powerful
but its the array you build
and within that array its the softwre how those CPUs speak to each other
China used the snap dragons wrote the sofware
NUMBER 1 super computer

USA repeatedly shoots itself in the foot

In political terms no matter DEmocrat or Republican
it is the child on the block
and China is the grandady
Indias more like your grandmother

Never write off your elders such an immature perspective

Nice piece of cherry picking. There's a lot more to the Chinese economy than high-tech. And that portion is seriously afflicted by the policies of Xi.

i  beg to differ. again, depends how you interpret reality around you.

probably the reason Trump has a bunch of tech guys around him is to stay competitive in the AI race.

Rather, the reason Trump has a bunch of tech guys around him is because they see an opportunity to profit bigly by enabling him.

'Is it possible that China owns the future?'

It is highly likely, almost a certainty.

They have been planning and executing their expansion for decades whilst the west looks forever inwards.

They lied about Deepseek, the costs were much higher, tens of thousands of NVidia H100 were installed and I don't see them being better than Mistral (FR) or chatGPT (US).

The new BYD has a super fast charger (5 minutes) and other nice features, but I would only buy cars made in Thailand to support Thailand. Thailand is already suffering enough from all the cheap Chinese imports.

What Thai company designs and builds cars? Maybe a few foreign companies have some assembled here, but that's just grunt labor.

This will provide long-term employment for Thais. The import of Chinese cars has already led to factory closures or job cuts at vehicle manufacturers in Thailand.

Grunt labor?, have a look at china:

I do think China is making strides in manufacturing. Their introduction of dark factories is way ahead of others, Dark factories are fully autonomous and therefore do not require lights.

We are going to see a future filled with Chinese nobel prize winners, with a run that will make the run of jewish nobel prize winners look second best.

In academia the Chinese will triumph, because 1) their IQ is above that of any others and 2) their work ethic is unique.

This will naturally translate into excellence in technology.

Culturally also the Chinese take a long term approach, politically too, whereas the democracies of the West are myopic short term bunglers in the worst case (Europe) or dependent on once in a generation genius (the US).

Chinese are good business people ,very easy to work with ,

nothing seems to be a problem for them ,and they do things

very quickly , moke up a prototype ,no problem ,change the

colour of something ,done , compared to British companies

where everything seems a problem ,ask for the price of something

take a week or two , can you do this , Oh I don't know ,but

it will be expensive ,no wonder the Chinese are so far ahead in

many things ,

China's unemployment problem is sure to get much worse, especially among the restless younger generation.
