Phichit is quiet - and surely very Thai country life - if that's what you are looking for, it should be fine... I lived many years in a similar environment and liked it very much. I learned language and culture.

Phichit is some of the worst Thailand has to offer. Pointless flat terrain in the central plains. Literally no reason to go there unless you've been everywhere else multiple times.

Not if you hop off and stroll around every Muang city.  Have a great munch, overnight and then hit the next on the train line.

I have done that in the 70's and enjoyed everyone of those towns.  I did it to practice Thai language.

It can't be that bad. They have coffee and Thai food.

I always stay in phisanulok, tak or petchabun town on the way north to Chiangmai or chiangrai. Pichit is too backwater for my taste. Moreover after watching too many American horror movies on backwater towns , I resist staying in unknown lodging in some town in the sticks.

Yes they do, quite a few shops, along with more than a few hotels to chose from, at different price poins.

If in the hood ...

Well, I guess most people don't look well at their own funeral! 🙂

Must have some natural features (mountains/sea) or something of cultural interest. Desolate flat plains are banned. Phichit is just plain old Thailand so it's not like you're going to see a new culture either.

I went to Krabi last week. This is a pool which descends down over 100 feet into a cave network, hence the color.

Krabi itself was an over priced tourist trap fill with Russians and Indians but the area itself has many interesting limestone mountains and formations which were nice to see.

Thailand is severely over touristed. Not even Thai's and expats go to many locations now because of mass tourism, and those includes all their best islands!

I tried Samui, Phuket and Krabi and I think I'm done now. Not only was it expensive but I was surrounded by Russians and Indians on all sides for 5 days.

Try Koh Chang, Prachuap or Ban Krut.

The biggest change is Lanta. Used to be quiet. Now super busy.

Thanks. I did try the beaches 20k south of Hua Hin last year. More of a Bangkok party crowd but I could have found some more quiet beaches if I knew in advance.

This year we tried Krabi but we almost did Koh Chang or Nakhon Si Thammarat since we've never been. I thought Koh Chang would be the same as Phuket or Krabi...

No airport at Koh Chang. Only a small one at Trat. Keeps people away.
