Man Slashed with Samurai Sword After Throwing First Punch in Samut Prakan Brawl
Picture courtesy of Kaoded. A 25-year-old man was rushed to hospital after being slashed in the arm with a samurai-style sword during a violent altercation in Samut Prakan. The victim, who reportedly initiated the fight, sustained a deep gash that nearly severed his right arm. The incident occurred at approximately 21:00 on 5 April, in Soi Tessaban Bang Pu 52 (near the leather tanning factory at KM 30) in the Thaiban area of Mueang District. Police from Mueang Samut Prakan Police Station, along with rescue volunteers from the Ruamkuson Foundation, responded to the scene following reports of a violent brawl. Upon arrival, they found Mr. Piyatharn Tunthit, 25, seated outside a residential building with a severe laceration to his right arm. He was given emergency first aid before being transported to Paolo Hospital Samut Prakan. Nearby, a large pool of blood was discovered, along with overturned bicycles and bloodstains leading up to the building. Witnesses and CCTV footage revealed that Mr. Piyatharn had confronted Mr. Pornprom Jakkram, 31, a tenant on the first floor of the building. The footage shows the two speaking before the conversation escalated, with Mr. Piyatharn striking Mr. Pornprom first. A second man, dressed in black and believed to be an associate of Mr. Pornprom, quickly joined in, attacking Mr. Piyatharn. The victim was punched, kicked, and eventually collapsed. As the fight intensified, Mr. Pornprom, unable to overpower his attacker, retrieved a one-metre-long samurai sword from his room and slashed Mr. Piyatharn in the arm. Following the assault, the victim was seen on CCTV staggering away while clutching his bleeding limb, seeking help from a neighbour. Police entered the building and apprehended Mr. Pornprom, who was found near a stairwell still holding the bloodstained weapon. He appeared intoxicated and admitted to attacking Mr. Piyatharn, claiming it was in self-defence after being punched first. He said he did not fully understand the reason behind the initial attack, only that the victim had mentioned an unrelated dispute involving someone known as “the man with the tattooed face”, a person he insisted he did not know. A second suspect involved in the beating fled the scene before officers arrived. Mr. Nukul Kaewkanokwijit, 35, a man who assisted Mr. Piyatharn, said the injured man approached him for help. “He said he had been slashed and needed assistance. He told me he had been drinking alone when the incident occurred and was attacked after a disagreement,” Mr. Nukul stated. Mr. Piyatharn later explained that he had intended to intervene in a separate dispute involving a friend, but an argument with Mr. Pornprom escalated when he noticed a weapon and decided to strike first. “I hit him because I thought he was going to attack me. I wanted to get the upper hand,” he said. Police have detained Mr. Pornprom for further questioning and legal action. Seven Injured inPickup Truck Crash in Sisaket

Seven people were injured, two of them seriously, in a road crash involving a pickup truck that overturned multiple times and crashed off the road in Sisaket province on 5 April. Emergency services were alerted shortly after the crash occurred near Ban Sok Hin junction, along the route from Uthumphon Phisai to Pho Si Suwan district. A black Nissan pickup truck driver, registration from Sisaket, had lost control and overturned off the roadside, landing upside down. The 191 Emergency Radio Centre received the initial report and quickly coordinated with Pho Si Suwan police, rescue teams from Sisaket Sangkhro Foundation, the Jaws of Life rescue unit, and volunteers from Rasi Salai and Uthumphon Phisai. Medical personnel from Pho Si Suwan Hospital were also dispatched urgently to the scene. Upon arrival, rescuers found five injured people, both male and female, scattered around the crash site, having been thrown from the vehicle’s open cargo bed. Two more passengers, seated in the front of the vehicle, remained trapped inside the overturned cabin and were in critical condition. Rescue teams immediately began cutting into the wreckage using hydraulic rescue tools. Due to the victims’ weakened conditions, medical personnel administered intravenous fluids during the extrication. After more than an hour, both were safely removed and rushed to Pho Si Suwan Hospital. Authorities later confirmed that all seven victims had survived but were still under medical care. The passengers told police they had left Mueang Sisaket earlier that morning, taking advantage of the extended holiday weekend to return to their hometown in Pho Si Suwan district. The driver reportedly lost control just before the Ban Sok Hin junction, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and roll several times. The five individuals in the truck bed were ejected on impact. The two front-seat occupants, who were wearing seatbelts, were pinned inside as the cabin was crushed during the rollover. Two Arrested for Illegal Crop Burning in Phichit, Found with Lighters in Hand

Two men have been arrested in Phichit province after being caught red-handed setting fire to rice stubble, contributing to thick smog and hazardous PM2.5 pollution across the region. One of the suspects was found holding a lighter at the scene, authorities confirmed. Police Colonel Natthakrit Noikampan, Superintendent of Subdivision 4 of the Natural Resources and Environmental Crime Division (NED), led the operation in cooperation with local investigators and disaster prevention officials. The first suspect, Mr. Suchart, a local resident of Tambon Thainam in Pho Thale district, was found burning rice stubble in a field approximately 500 metres from the Pho Thale–Bang Lai Road. The fire produced heavy smoke which drifted across the road, severely reducing visibility for motorists and increasing the risk of serious accidents. Mr. Suchart admitted to the offence and was charged under the Land Traffic Act with “causing a hazard that impacts traffic safety.” In a separate incident, officers apprehended Mr. Krisana in Bang Mun Nak district with two lighters in his possession. He had set fire to stubble in a field in Tambon Hokrai, affecting more than 50 rai of land, including areas near roads, wooded zones, and close to residential areas. The thick smoke spread for several kilometres, posing significant health risks to nearby communities. During questioning, Mr. Krisana confessed that he had been paid to burn the stubble and had not anticipated the scale of the fire or the volume of smoke it would produce. He was charged under the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Act for “causing a public danger.” Both suspects were handed over to investigators at Pho Thale and Bang Mun Nak police stations for legal proceedings. Colonel Natthakrit noted that illegal burning activities have increased during night-time hours, with offenders often fleeing the scene before authorities arrive. “These individuals are fully aware that their actions are illegal, yet they continue to violate the law intentionally,” he said. “Open burning causes widespread harm, not only to the air and visibility but also to public health and safety. Serial Conman Arrested After Posing as Police Officer to Scam Victims Across the Country

A 29-year-old man has been arrested in Nakhon Pathom after a string of fraudulent schemes in which he posed as a police officer to dupe victims into buying second-hand air conditioning units and used cars. Police from the Crime Suppression Division (CSD), acting under orders from Pol Maj Gen Wittaya Sriprasertphap, apprehended Mr. Surawut on the side of Phutthamonthon Sai 5 Road in Sam Phran district, Nakhon Pathom province. He was wanted under a warrant issued by the Nonthaburi Provincial Court on 28 November 2023 for charges including conspiracy to defraud the public and computer-related fraud. According to investigators, Mr. Surawut had a pattern of impersonating a member of the 191 police unit. He advertised used air conditioners on social media, claiming they were surplus equipment from the 191 police headquarters. Victims, believing the goods to be genuine, transferred money but never received the items and were subsequently unable to contact him. In a separate scam, the suspect posed as a police officer to sell used cars. After victims purchased the vehicles, he would contact them a week later claiming the cars had documentation issues and needed to be returned. He would show fake money transfer slips on his phone to convince the buyers he had refunded their money. Trusting the transaction was complete, victims returned the cars, only to later discover the transfers were fraudulent. By then, Mr. Surawut had already vanished with the vehicles. Police say the suspect has a long history of scams involving multiple victims across various provinces. He is currently facing at least five outstanding arrest warrants related to similar offences. During questioning, Mr. Surawut reportedly confessed to the crimes. He was handed over to Bang Kruai Police Station for further legal proceedings. -- 2025-04-07 -

Outcry in Prachinburi Village as Acrid Smell from Chinese-Owned Factory Sparks Health Fears

Residents of Moo 9 in Bo Thong subdistrict, Kabin Buri district, are voicing growing anger over foul, chemical-like odours they believe are coming from a nearby Chinese-owned electronic waste recycling plant. The stench, which some describe as resembling herbicide, has reportedly blanketed the entire village, sparking health concerns and frustration over a perceived lack of official response. The issue was first highlighted in a viral Facebook post by a local woman, Ms Nongnuch, who wrote: “It stinks across the whole of Moo 9, Bo Thong. Can local leaders please come and inspect the factories?” The post has since attracted a flood of comments from fellow villagers who also complained of a strong, choking smell causing nausea and difficulty breathing. When reporters visited the area at around 10:40 on 5 April, Ms Nongnuch explained that the odour was most intense late at night between 22:00 and 23:00. “At first, I thought something in my house was burning,” she said. “But my partner said it smelled like herbicide, very strong, very real. The smell persisted the entire day.” She added that the issue appears to extend beyond her immediate village. “A friend from nearby Moo 4 in Ban Kut Pla Wi came to visit and said the smell was just as bad there.” Despite the widespread complaints on social media, Ms Nongnuch said she had not yet made an official report to the local authorities, though others had reached out to their village head and subdistrict council members. Another resident, Ms Ampee Sesri, confirmed the stench had lingered for at least two days. “It’s a sharp, chemical smell. I don’t know if it’s herbicide or fumes from a factory. There’s one about two kilometres away, near the end of the village.” When contacted by the press, Mr Ekkaluck Sesri, head of Moo 9 village, admitted he had not received a formal complaint but was aware of the Facebook posts. He said factory representatives had already responded, attributing the smell to the initial heating of machinery during startup. A investigation found a small electronic waste melting facility approximately two kilometres from the village, emitting a pungent odour closely resembling herbicide. Residents are now calling for a thorough investigation into the factory’s operations and for immediate action to protect public health.
