PTP and Thaksin inherited this crisis as well.

...however he did not inherit it alone as in 2001. Not familiar with the 2001 situation details to compare to todays situation though, but anyway he is on a pretty short leash to do anything that the power holders see as negative.

Actually Move Forward inherited the crisis. But PT benefited/help inveigle the soft putsch which denied them their election victory and they got banned.

That's also the answer to the poster who asked if they'll ever change or change in time. The last time that came close they massacred their own people. Now they camouflage things a bit better.

Thailand is a kind of Myanmar Lite.

I must have missed the bit where the Move Forward party were elected and formed the government.

Granted that they won more seats than any other party, but not enough seats to form a government, and if they formed the government they would be in power and running the country now.

However they could NOT form a government or even a coalition government, so after a period of trying, the party with the next highest number of seats (in this case, the PTP) was given the opportunity, who could and have formed a coalition government and now run the country.

As the MFP are not in power, how could they have inherited the problem?

tax foreigners' already taxed incomes... doesn't that sound like a tariff?

all this gvt has been talking about is taxes here taxes there ...

I just hope thailand gets a taste of its own medicine and that their inflated bht comes tumbling down

Poor farang incomes are NOT the focus of the tax changes.  Prior to the proposed changes Thai citizens could earn income outside Thailand basically tax free.  Billions of DOLLARS earning income that when brought back (repatriated) to Thailand were not taxed.  Forget about the million foreigners and think about all the Thais who have more wealth than you can imagine.

Thailand indeed has serious structural issues and the business model they have run has reached its peak.

Whether thaksins ideas to solve the situation are correct is completely another matter - and if they were, would those in power allow implementation of the changes.

Well they didn't last time.
