I do a quick boog check every time I pass a mirror, like in the Men's room...  Being careful not to stare at myself for too long.

There's a very simple answer to this question. The one you see in the mirror is not the same as the one you see in a photograph. 

 

Most people's faces are not perfectly symmetrical. Facial asymmetry, where traits don't perfectly mirror each other on both sides of the face, is common and normal. 

 

The one you see in the mirror is the one you are used to seeing, so it comes as a mild shock when you see yourself in a photo.

It’s simply an issue of lens optics. It’s called barrel distortion, and it happens for two main reasons: the closeness of the lens to the subject, and the wider the angle of the lens, the more distortion you get. Both of those factors are common issues with front-facing smartphone cameras.

 

Even with decent smartphones, the front-facing lens is often of much lower quality than the ones on the back, which are designed for general photography. And if you’re using a budget phone, the front camera quality is likely even worse.

I have some photos of current girlfriend I took myself so know they are "untouched" yet when I look at them I think no she doesnt quite look that good !

It's absolutely bizarre. One of my girls took lots of photos and videos of herself. When you see them on her social media you'd think she was Miss Grand. 

 

When I take photos of her, nothing like that. She doesn't look half as good. 

 

It's almost as if it was 2 different people. Completely bizarre.

I'm not talking about a minor difference.

Looking at my face in the mirror, I'd want to smash me.

Looking at my face in selfies, etc. and I feel truly horrified and just want to look away.

I have no idea which is closer to the truth.

It makes a difference how we approach the world as to how we FEEL like we look like.

Well, I don't know which version to believe.

I'm not talking only about age per se, but I have had people tell me I look 25 younger (not talk about "sexy man" talking bar workers).

It's more like in the mirror still cute, in photos ugly city.

Speaking of age, I recall similar feelings of photographing badly when I was a young man, but not as dramatic a difference.

There are special mirrors for that, used in beauty salons and cosmetic surgeries

Once again, that's why a lot of people walk around with a booger all day. 

 

I hate the ones that look like they're on a hinge, blowing in and out as I'm talking to someone.  It's really distracting.

Some mobiles (camera settings) flip the stored image of selfies - i.e. your right eye is now on the left-hand side. A mirror doesn't do that. Makes quite a bit of a difference.

A mirror definitely provides a 3D image.  What you see in a mirror is 3 dimensional.  We are able to see the three dimensions (width, height and depth) when we look in a mirror.  That's just how mirrors work.

My wife and I would perform booger checks on each other before we got into our respective cars and drove to work each morning.

 

Can't say I ever deliberately let her walk around with one.  That's just mean.
