GammaGlobulin Posted April 12 Posted April 12 Dear Folks, I just had a nice little nap, and awoke to: a. No Hilux trucks speeding about, up and down the roads b. All noisy people must be at home preparing their water guns? c. All noisy people are somewhere far away, dumping buckets of water on each other? d. All noisy people have boarded buses and other veHicles, headed out of town, upcountry? e. All music festivals are closed, and no more banging on drums in the distance, or nearby? Not only the silence DEAFENING, but it is the way Thailand should be, everyday, and PURE BLISS….!!! Why can’t we have SongKran, or the lead up to SongKran, every day? Maybe soon, we will run out of oil, or we will entirely convert to Chinese EVs, even the DumpTruck and Hiluxes, and people will be able to live the quality of life Thailand was once known for? Quiet… QUIET…. This is the way man was designed to live. And, I do not mean to imply CREATIONIST origins of the Human Animal, either. This is bliss. I am now sitting outside, with my MYNAs, and having a glass of iced-tea, and I know…that… THIS is the way I was meant to live. All noisy people have now been self-banished from my glorious area. I love quiet. And, I love to sit in my quiet compound and listen to…. The Rolling Stones.. As LOUD as I like. Glorious! Regards, Gamma 2 1

Maybe more accurate that you are disturbing other people's peace and quiet! 2 2 2

The headphones I have do not block out the BANGING ON DRUMS from far and wide around my compound. This is unfortunate. And, also, they don't sound quite as good as my 8-speakers connected to the computer...and not small speakers, either. I have two sets of nice Audio-Technica phones, but I really now think they might be a bit overrated, especially for the price....though I am not sure.

FlorC Posted April 12 Posted April 12 Even industrial grade headphones will keep the thai woofers out.

Seems very odd behavior. Good Speakers sound best indoors with carpeting and sound absorbing materials on walls, which I also have.

I love quiet. And, I love to sit in my quiet compound and listen to…. The Rolling Stones.. As LOUD as I like. Glorious! Regards, Gamma There's certainly a different attitudes to noise / loud noise in the LOS. Here's one example: I was asked to present an all day additional lecture, on competitive advantage at a good university in Hat Yai. The uni put the accommodation and local transport details in he hands of a local agent. I mentioned in the early planning that: - I had been to Hat Yai before and I didn't need / want a tour of the city. - I wanted a room with no outside sound / loud music. - I wanted a basic room with bath, nothing more. I arrived at the airport, agent meets me, she's got 3 staff with her to carry my small suitcase and computer bag. With no discussion we go to a coffee shop in the airport which turns into a nightmare of wrong orders (I asked clearly for hot latte but a luke warm cappuccino arrives. I politely mention that I asked for hoy latte, one minion responds 'but all Americans love cappuccino!' Then a Tuna sandwich arrives (not ordered by me) then a ham and cheese sandwich arrives with som tum on the side. Then a beer arrived, not requested by me. All this has consumed over 1 hr of time and I want to get to the hotel and sleep. Then agent asks if I would like to see / hear a local band. I said 'not tonight thanks'. Response from a minion 'but you're here for only one night so the music / band must be tonight'. We arrive at the hotel at 10:50 pm, the hotel billed as 5 star and I discover contrary to my request the agent has been me into a hotel penthouse suite on the top floor and the land next door is an outdoor bar with very loud live music and in fact there's three live bands all close together. The loud music floating up to my suite is very / extremely loud. I tell the agent that I requested a quiet room. She's in panic 'but it's too late to change your room. 5 minutes go down to the lobby, say nothing except ask for a room on a mid level floor on the opposite side of the hotel to the music / bar area. All done, can hear some music but I get some sleep. Morning; I go downstairs for breakfast but fist do check out and pay for the second room. Agent arrives. I mention strongly 'we need to leave now to get to the Hat Yai uni because I have to set up a presentation'. I pick up my suitcase and compute bag and head towards the van ignoring the agent. I open the van door, minion inside has the van system play rock music full blast. I insisted it be turned off.
Watawattana Posted April 12 Posted April 12 When I was at college/uni and whilst working I often listened to rock/metal music using headphones. This was to drown out all of the unexpected noises that would distract me. My brain cell was able to filter out the music, which had drowned out the other audible disturbances. Worked perfectly. Of course, no good for trying to get sleep, so I totally understand the need to find a quieter room. Where I've lived before I'be been close to main roads, train lines, tram lines or airports. After a couple of nights I've generally filtered out that noise, so getting good sleep. Would not fancy being next to a loud bar, and I definitely didn't like being close to a fire brigade/ambulance station; I never was able to filter those sirens out.

Lacessit Posted April 12 Posted April 12 IMO I am inured to noise in Thailand. Now in the village for Songkhran. There will be announcements from the temple, loud music, roosters crowing at midnight, cats fighting at 2 am, dog packs howling at 4 am. Or vice versa. For the next 4 days, I will only travel in the car. Too risky on the scooter. I will be buttoned up, watching reruns of REBUS and Foyle's War. Occasionally dropping into ASEAN to observe. 1

Fortunately, the humor, IMHO, is rather delicious. Unfortunately, the humor cannot be appreciated by the average American, these days. I miss the old days, when humor was more interesting, and more subtle, and more....whatever. (Is that Ripping Yarns or Ripping Yams?)
Denim Posted April 12 Posted April 12 We lived in a new moobahn in Nonthaburi during the Yingluk flood. Brilliant ! Open the windows in the morning and you could hear a pin drop. Zero background traffic or industrial noise. Only birds singing. Amazingly, even though our living room had a foot of water in it ( and little fish ) the power and water worked throughout. Couldn't use the toilet though and at the end of it had quite a collection of poop bags but overall , a nice experience. Bit like covid....another pleasant quiet time.

Yes, QUIET at any price, is totally worth the minor sacrifices. I definitely agree.

If I recall you are from the hills east of Melbourne. Kookaburras and cockatoos is as noisy as it gets. I like living there. In Jomtiem where I am it's quiet too. Bit of building noise sometimes as they fill the foreshore with more condos.

(Is that Ripping Yarns or Ripping Yams?) I have usually found Australian humor baffles Americans. Far too deadpan and laconic for them. Try this. To Aussies, it's one of the funniest interviews ever recorded. Whenever I feel a bit down, it always cheers me up.

It's the sulphur-crested cockatoos that really screech.
