I doubt after all my study I will NOT retire to Thailand 

I have been locked up there, assaulted etc so it becomes too traumatic for me 

 

Well today at work I was partnered with a beautiful man who originally came from India ,the Punjab area ..I must say I was shocked when he told me India is part of Asia ,really I shouted 

 

He tells me it's so cheap to retire,you can even have servants to cook & Clean for you full-time for less than 3000 baht a month 

 

May I perhaps ask those of you how cheap India is for retirement and your experiences 

 

I could see myself becoming more spiritual, absolutely beautiful people

India is nice as a working expat but they treat women horribly.

Got sent to India for a few weeks with work. Would never go back! 

 

Chauffeur stopped for a sh*t on the side of the road on the way from the airport, body burnt on street in an “upmarket” area, begging everywhere, litter everywhere.

I enjoyed the food and local hosts couldn’t have been more welcoming / accommodating but never again.

   You are in no position to be hiring people to work for you .

You can barely  afford to buy food. let alone paying other people to cook it  for you

Why do some people like to retire in third-world countries? Is it just the money? I lived most of my life in OZ. My wife is Thai and has lived here for 22 years. I am a pensioner, and she is a nurse we have no problems living here.

Way off topic but I like to suggest another option for people looking for low cost, friendly people, beautiful scenery. affordable and high quality health care via a hybrid private/national health care scheme actually required for expats, very low retirement visa qualifications, modern infrastructure (you can drink the water), no need for a car (buses and cheap taxis), excellent climate year round "spring" like weather, and safe enough if you're not looking for trouble -- the coffee region of Colombia (specifically Armenia). Housing for expats mostly in a wide choice of modern condos with the expected amenities as Armenia is a top choice for retirement for Colombians from Bogota. No it's not perfect. Not as safe as Thailand but safer than U.S. big cities and Colombian food is bland as they don't like spicy food, limited Asian food,. etc. That's where I would be checking out first IF I wasn't so invested and settled in Thailand already.

Worked for an Indian company for 10+ years... Required to give all my employees face time every quarter around the world...  Including multiple cities in India (2-3 weeks/qtr)...

 

For anybody considering retiring to India, especially having not lived/worked there before... You are out of your bleeding mind to even consider it...  It won't be as cheap as you think, cause you won't be living like the locals... and foreign products will be a challenge to acquire (depending on where you settle, and if you settle in a big city, it definitely won't be cheap)...

 

... and if you couldn't cut it in Thailand, you definitely won't in India...  YMMV

Probably financial reasons, For some from cold winter countries it may be climate. Most westerners in Thailand seem to be British and UK has high cost of living but low wages and pesions. Not to mention weather.

Tourist Thailand and non-Tourist Thailand.

Living in the latter is different from living in the former.

On my last trip to India a few years back I was surprised how prices had jumped since the 1990's. I think Thailand is better value on a like for like budget and quality of life is way superior (very important in later years).

 

India is fantastic for visits long and short but living there full time would be too much for most people. As mentioned earlier there's no long stay retirement visa options. And don't be fooled by apparent spirituality, the country has more bogus holy men than anywhere in the world.

Food is bad (no beef)

Women are worse (just wont go with foreign men)

Walking around anywhere you become a tourist attraction (and those are the places to walk)

You can't take a woman to your hotel (unless you are married)

Unless you are working in an office you will struggle to find anyone that speaks English.

It is the dirtiest country I have ever visited.

There are traffic jams all around the cities as cows have right of way.

Most Indians do not know what deodorant is.

People just p1$$ and sh4t in the street at least in Thailand some efforts are taken to avoid that

Apart from a couple of beach resorts that are steadily getting worse crap if you are a beach lover

The south is extremely conservative to the point you would get stared at for wearing shorts

It pretty much smells of sewerage any part of the country you are in

But apart from that fill your boots

There are big cities esp. in Isaan that are still non-Tourist.

Mumbai looks ok , my friend suggested a City called Delhi 

 

I am now watching YouTube though,  there's a City for expats called GOA 

 

It looks nice on YouTube but may be too expensive for me

For me, it's because life in developed countries has become bland and boring. I enjoy the smell of cookfires coming from people's homes, and the occasional sight and sounds of goats or water buffalo being herded down cobble stone streets.
