The USA produced about 680,000 tonnes of aluminium in 2024. Demand for aluminium in the same year was 5 million tonnes.

Trump's tariff of 25% on imported aluminium commenced early in March.

Aluminium production needs bauxite, and cheap electricity. The US has limited supplies of bauxite, and expensive electricity. The bauxite it has is used in making abrasives.

So a US manufacturer of aircraft, or pots and pans, can swallow the cost of the tariffs, or pass those costs on to end users.

As an example of sheer economic dumbf***kery, that takes some beating.

I just wonder how the MAGA's on ASEAN justify this BS.

And guess who supplies a big chunk of their much needed aluminium?

And who put a 25% tariff on aluminum that the consumer pays for?

In 2023, Canada's primary aluminum production was estimated at 3.3 million tonnes, making it the fourth-largest producer globally. This production is fueled by renewable hydroelectric power, giving Canadian aluminum a lower carbon footprint than many other producers. The majority of Canadian aluminum production (nearly 90%) is located in Quebec.

  • Exports:
A significant portion of Canadian aluminum is exported, primarily to the United States.
  • Smelters:

There are nine aluminum smelters in Canada, eight in Quebec and one in British Columbia.

Lol, it's not "hero worship", it's just the truth.  Bessent was a hedge fund manager who worked with Soros. He was part of the team that came up with the trade that broke the bank of England. He lectured economics at Yale.

These are just the facts. Though I realise you leftists need to deny reality now, you should still recognize it.

Any one of Trump's economic team has more brains than the entire anti-Trump brigade on Asean put together.

Well, whatever the truth of your gratuitous insult of "the entire anti-Trump brigade on Asean put together" may be, Bessent will not be negotiating against us, will he? So what's your point? This looks like just more empty hero worship.

Together with another guy, he's the main architect of Trump's economic policy. This tariff episode is just phase 1. Phase 2 will see negotiations and a new Bretton Woods reshaped in America's favour.

What they are doing is very clever.

Or maybe he's just trying to hang on for dear life as Trump zigs and zags

"After his reversal on social media, Mr. Trump’s team was put in the unenviable position of trying to spin the media that this was the plan all along, a brilliant strategy straight out of the pages of the president’s best-selling book, “The Art of the Deal.” Mr. Bessent went so far as to deny that the bond market had driven the change.

When Mr. Trump came out to explain his decision on Wednesday, however, he undercut both Mr. Bessent and Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, citing the jittery market and saying he was acting “instinctively, more than anything else.”

What he is doing carries an element of risk and some people have and will get hurt.

However, Bessent and the other guy have published a paper on reshaping global trade. The aim is clear. Devalue the dollar and still keep the dollar as reserve currency.

It's a genius move if they pull it off.

The more I think about this, the more I think that this is Bessent's way of covertly signaling to other countries just to appease Trump by making an empty promise which will allow Trump to claim a win.

They will want allies to come to the table and negotiate good deals with America. Other countries will still have to deal with the tariffs.

Clearly it's working so far, Vietnam, Japan many have signalled they will negotiate.

There's negotiating on the one hand, and there's reaching an actual deal on the other vs just an empty statement of intent. As Bessent himself said

"There could be numerous countries, and it may not be the actual trade document, but we will have an agreement in principle and be able to move forward from there," he added.

The way he is ruining the US I suspect the only way he will escape from the USA to Russia will be via a submarine at night off a darkened beach!
