Accident Motorcyclist Dies After Plunging from Bridge in Bangkok, Police Investigating if Hit-&-Run
Picture courtesy of Matichon. A 42-year-old plumbing technician tragically lost his life after falling from a bridge into a riverside garden in the Daokanong area of Bangkok on the evening of 23 June. Police are now working to determine whether the man was struck by another vehicle or lost control of his motorbike. The incident occurred at around 20:00, on the bridge crossing the Daokanong Canal, heading towards Charoen Nakhon Road in Rat Burana district. Lieutenant Sutha Inkaew, a duty investigator from Bang Kho Laem Police Station, responded to the emergency call and coordinated with doctors from Siriraj Hospital and rescue workers from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation. At the scene, officers found a black Yamaha Grand Filano motorbike overturned in the right-hand lane of the bridge. Below the bridge, in a riverside garden beside the canal wall, lay the body of the victim. He had fallen approximately 5 metres from the bridge and sustained fatal injuries. The deceased was identified as Mr. Samart, aged 42. He was wearing a light blue T-shirt and matching shorts, and was barefoot. His injuries included a large open wound on his right knee exposing the bone, a visibly broken left arm, facial and cranial trauma, and bleeding from the mouth, nose, ears and eyes. Abrasions covered much of his body. A black-and-green shoulder bag found at the scene contained his ID card, work badge, passport and 65 baht in cash. Mr. Chatch, a 47-year-old local man fishing beneath the bridge at the time, witnessed part of the incident. He told police he initially heard loud clattering sounds and assumed rubbish was being thrown from above, a not uncommon occurrence in the area. He noticed a pink helmet fall into the water and a blue flip-flop nearby. Moments later, he realised a person had fallen from the bridge and immediately called out to a friend to contact emergency services. “When I walked closer, I saw someone lying there. I wasn’t shocked, I just wanted to get help to him quickly,” Mr. Chatch recounted. “But when I shone my flashlight at his face, I couldn’t see it moving. He wasn’t breathing. When the rescue team arrived, they confirmed he had already passed.” Police have not yet concluded whether Mr. Samart lost control of his vehicle and struck the guardrail or if he was struck by another unidentified vehicle, causing him to be thrown from his motorbike and fall to his death. The investigation is ongoing as officers review CCTV footage and gather any witness testimony in an effort to determine the exact cause of the incident.
