Crime Gunmen Attack Monks' Escort, Leaving Community in Shock in Songkhla

In a shocking incident that has left the community reeling, unidentified gunmen opened fire on a police vehicle escorting monks during their morning alms round in Songkhla province’s Saba Yoi district. The attack, occurring on April 22 at approximately 6.30am, resulted in the tragic death of a 16-year-old novice monk and left another injured.

 

The ambush took place on Suan On Road in Ban Khlong Rian village, just 500 metres from Wat Khula temple. The four-door Isuzu pickup, driven by Police Lieutenant Watthana Chumapan of Saba Yoi Police Station, was accompanying six monks and novices as part of their daily collection of alms.

 

The gunmen opened fire on the vehicle, prompting Watthana to return fire with both a rifle and a handgun. Amidst the chaos, he managed to flee the scene, rushing the injured to Saba Yoi Hospital. Tragically, his son, 16-year-old novice monk Phongkorn Chumapan, succumbed to his injuries. Meanwhile, 12-year-old novice monk Phokanit Morasilp sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

 

 

 

Authorities have launched a full investigation and manhunt to identify and apprehend the attackers, though the motives remain unknown. The incident has left the local community bewildered, with many questioning why monks, revered figures in Thai society, would become targets in such a violent act.

 

The attack heightened fears regarding the safety of religious figures and marked a worrying uptick in violence within areas traditionally deemed secure. As investigators pursue leads and the community grapples with grief and uncertainty, there is a widespread call for swift justice to address this senseless violence.

 

While the public awaits answers, the incident underscores broader concerns about growing tensions and insecurity in the region. The outcome of the ongoing investigation will be crucial in restoring community confidence and ensuring the protection of religious figures amidst these challenging times.
