Getting a 5 year motorbike license requirements

I have a temporary motorbike license that is valid for 2 years.

If I want to change this license into a 5 year license after 2 years, do I need to do tests again about traffic rules or can I just show up at the DLT office and get my new license?

If it is the same as a car license you just turn up and get a 5 year one.

When I had a motorbike license that was what I found out. It was a number of years ago and it may have changed but I doubt it. The big thing is probably being clean and not getting done from drink driving etc. Issues such as these could possibly go against you.

Now for every renewal must watch a video, about 45 min, answer 4 or 5 questions at the end (or middle, can't remember) which are very obvious and in English. Link provided on DLT website and must do this at home on computer or mobile etc., at the end get screenshot or photo of QR code that appears. Valid for 6 months. They need this on the day going for renewal. Then the usual reaction test and taking photo is done. I heard in Phuket at least, can no longer watch this video at DLT, must do it beforehand... 

 

But in Phuket last year they gave me an appointment of 1.5 month after I went to renew (5 year to 5 year renewal). But usually it's about 2 weeks, not sure why, and I even argued with the manager, but she said they change only if I bring a proof of flight ticket that I am leaving, then they change it, otherwise have to wait...! (I said I'm leaving, but they are getting smart...). 

 

I think other offices are not like this, Phuket is a meyham, too many people, and they still want more to come...! 🤔

I would advice you to renew little bit after your driving license is expired (birth date). In that case you get a new one until your first birth date + 5 years which can be nearly 6 years total.

In short, OP, you will need the same documents that were required for your initial 2 year temp license:

- Proof of Address (CoR from immigration or Affirmation of Address from your consulate)

- Medical Certificate (from a local clinic)

- Passport Copy (ID and Visa Page)

- Overseas license (copy of)

- Overseas IDP (If overseas license is not in English language)

 

You may need an appointment (depending on specific DLT).

- You will need to watch the 45min video online before hand (online)

- You will need to QR code from the end of the Video

- At the test centre you will carry out the 'class-room tests' (colour blindness, proximity, reaction etc)

- You will not need to do any outside practical test

I have renewed my 2 year and 5 year for both car and motorbike, they never asked for Overseas Licence or IDP in Phuket...

I think mileage varies - the DLT's in different area's do have varying requirements... (for example, some accept a yellow house book as proof of address, others do not).

 

Common sense suggests take the overseas license with you, its better to have it and not need it than to leave it at home and risk getting asked for it (each time I've renewed my license, in BKK, I've had to submit my overseas license and provide copies).

No it didn't...    News a couple of days ago stated that a 'new draft ministerial directive to allow eligible drivers to 'soon' renew their driving licences online has been approved'...  

 

So.. nothing online yet, its also completely unknown, and unlikely, that this will be extended to non-Thai's as systems such as this will likely be tied to the Thai (Blue) ID card, as foreigners still need a written proof of address that can't simply be approved by a digital system.

Its not though is it... 

 

The Op will still need to provide all the documentation and attend in person...   

 

All an agent provides is an additional layer of efficiency with queue cutting (if they have some arrangements with the DLT staff) and holds your hand through the process - hardly necessary.

 

An agent doesn't do anything that can't so very easily be done alone.

This does not apply when moving from a 2 year licence to a 5 years. Only when renewing a full 5 year licence. Unlike a full licence, the 2 year one does not expire on ones birthday.

Not sure how it is from 2 to 5 years, but recently renewed a 5 years bike licence. Had to watch the video and show the QR code as proof. Also needed a medical certificate. Went in without appointment. Did the colour test and that was it.

I just read within the last few days that renewals will be done online soon.  Unfortunately the article didn't have a implementation date.

Where did you renew your license if I may ask?

And did you have to answer questions about the video?
