Hi everyone,

Right now I’m on a tourist visa, and I’ve heard mixed experiences — some people say getting a TIN is easy, while others say it can be a bit of a hassle depending on who you talk to at the Revenue Department. Is it only possible to get it if you stay 180 days in Thailand in a kalander year?

I’m also wondering:

  • Can I get a TIN while on a tourist visa?

  • Do the yellow house book or pink Thai ID card include or help generate a TIN?

  • Any tips or recent experiences on how to successfully apply for a TIN?

I really appreciate any help or advice. Thanks in advance!

Easiest, if you have a Thai bank account:

Ask to have the withholding tax on the interested refunded. Get a statement of the withholding tax at any bank branch (takes less than 20 minutes), and take it to the local revenue office (less than 1 hour).

There is no minimum,  but maybe they are not happy if you ask for a refund of 26 satang.

Two obvious questions is how many days are you in Thailand for in a calendar year?  Are you remitting monies to Thailand?

Under 180 days then no need to worry and the same if you are not remitting monies.
If you are on a tourist visa, then not very long unless you are looking to change to a long term visa?
Why worry about a TIN and open up a can of worms?

I don't want to upset you because you sound like an extremely honest bloke but why put up the white flag and surrender to the tax department. The late billioaire media mogul in Australia once made a statement to the parliament and said that anyone who pays more tax than they have to is a mug  ( idiot ). So why not do some research on the rules  , have a nice cup of  coffee and relax because you may not have to be involved in this scheme at all.

When I got to the Revenue office with all the papers needed they said. Need copies in Thai language, and each paper stamped and signed by your embassy. If no stamps you have to pay 10 000 Baht. Problem is, that very few, if any, embassies stamp and sign this kind of documents.

This is all the more reason why everybody who may be affected  should just relax because like a lot of government policies they announce them before they have worked out the details  on how they will work.

1) You need to go to the revenue department – the branch hyou need will be in the customs house, where you register for vat and TIN – and apply for a TIN. You will get a little matrix-written slip with proof of your TIN. It should be fairly easy to apply now, when all foreigners staying 180 days and more need to pay income tax of transferred fund.

2) A Yellow House Book includes a Thai ID-number for aliens, which is same number used for TIN and on a pink ID-card. I'm not sure if you still need to visit the revenue office to activate the Yellow House Book ID-number as TIN, or you just do it online when register for the tax return form.

3) Where I live it's easy and kind service in the revenue office. The online tax return dorm also works well, if you don't have any foreign paid income tax to deduct.
