Is a Fiberglass pool or Concrete better?

Featured Replies

Just starting to get a few quotes for a concrete pool with salt chlorinator and keep getting builders saying the fiberglass ones are better.
I understand they are quicker and can get a quick profit but everything i read is saying i should go for fiberglass
The concrete pools look like they are higher maintenance and thinking about it a few pools i have seen that are tiled have tiles missing
Much prefer the look of a tiled concrete pool but could do without extra maintenance
Really not worried about the time it will take as we are in the middle of building a house so no rush

Would prefer a concrete pool so I can get the exact size/shape /depth I would like but starting to see lot's of advantages with fiberglass pools.

Vinyl pools I am told to avoid and probably are the least desirable to me at least.

Salt chlorinator pools I am told work best with fiberglass pools.

After searching I keep finding answers like this.

Anyone else gone for a fiberglass pool rather than a tiled concrete pool?

I've had both and both great.

Trouble with fibreglass is that the builder has to be very good during the manufacturing process. Mine developed bubbles in the gelcoat (I think this is the expression). Still lasted many years.

Also it could be a problem buying and installing a large fibreglass pool with a varying depth.

My current cement/tiles/salt pool is great.

8 years old and you do have to keep the PH correct or the pool grout can slowly be eaten out.

I also found the stainless pool fitting from pool suppliers were of lower quality than local stainless shops.

Exactly right, manufacturing is the issue with fibreglass shells. As explained in the other thread on this subject, I will only deal with 2 Aussie own manufacturers that both have over 40 years experience. Just about all the rest are cowboys.
