I went there many years back maybe 1980, it will need a lot of work to bring it back up to working level as it was falling into the sea back then.

IMO it will cost millions of USD$ to bring iy up to a habitable working an living condition then it will need staffing for 4 shifts 24/7/365. Where will they find enough staff for that. I think that water, electricity can/will be piped from the mainland, but everything else will need to be brought by ship.

Does that Trump really understand anything?

With his obsession to save money, I think there will be a change of plan when he see’s the costs involved. Doubt DOGE would be in favour of it.

Three times the daily cost to house prisoners in other prisons, on top of demolition and rebuilding costs.

Even if it did go ahead, I doubt it would be anywhere near completed before the end of his Presidency. So would need the new President to be in favour of it as well.

Money? It is all about the money. The US government has lots of money to dole out to industry, to bring the prison up to spec. Of course , it doesn't mean there is a long term future for the new prison. The construction companies landing the contract, through some sort of bidding process, aren't responsible for that.

Construction is his world. He knows all the best people where the money should go to. He used to buy concrete from Anthony “Fat Tony” Salerno and Paul Castellano. He understands how to grease the right palms. Before, he had to work with the Mafia to get Trump Tower built. Now, he needs to make sure those who bankrolled his bid for the Presidency are rewarded.

Waiting to see where the federal pillow contract goes to.

For Trump, it's a blast from the past and a symbolic gesture, for sure. There's no good reason why that place needs to be a prison.  I never went there, but I can remember standing around in San Francisco looking at it.   That was back in the days when San Francisco was still a civilized place.
