Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has acknowledged the possibility of a secret trade deal with the United States concerning tariffs, as informal discussions between the two countries unfold. Speaking on her television programme, "Empowering Thais with PM Paetongtarn," she discussed the ongoing talks aimed at achieving a mutually beneficial outcome.

Paetongtarn noted that certain sensitive aspects of the negotiations cannot be disclosed publicly, as revealing them might impact talks with other countries also negotiating with the US, potentially causing international tensions. She affirmed that pursuing private agreements with the US is a common diplomatic approach globally.

The trade discussions with Washington, which were paused due to the March 28 earthquake in Bangkok, resumed this month. These talks are part of an effort to address the proposed 36% tariff on Thai goods, initially set to begin on April 9 but delayed by President Donald Trump for 90 days.

The Thai government's negotiating strategy, led by Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira, prioritises thorough preparation to navigate the complexities of the trade surplus, which stood at an estimated US$45.6 billion last year. Although Thai officials, originally scheduled to visit Washington on April 23, have delayed their trip, the government is committed to resolving the matter within the 90-day period to ensure a coherent negotiation stance.

Ultimately, Prime Minister Paetongtarn aims for a strategic agreement that aligns with national interests, while maintaining transparency with Thai citizens where possible, as the government seeks to navigate this critical diplomatic endeavour.

It is ok.. they will strike a deal either secretly or openly.

China is in the news as having secret talks now with the US about the trade tariffs also. However, they are in their own news as being adamant and unchanging to further oppose. the tariffs. Secretly they are discussing a deal with the US.
