A 36-year-old man with a history of psychiatric illness and drug abuse has been taken into custody after his father was found dead with severe facial injuries in a rented home in Phichit province. The son reportedly attempted to feign innocence by cycling to notify a local rescue unit about the body.

Police Lieutenant Nattawut Netthong of Pho Thale Police Station received a report from the Pho Thale Rescue Unit that a man had been found dead under suspicious circumstances at a rented property in Moo 2, Pho Thale subdistrict. Officers and emergency responders were immediately dispatched to the scene.

The victim, identified as Mr. Sompong aged 63, was discovered lying face-up on the floor with his face covered in blood. Blood spatters were also found surrounding the area. Mr. Sompong, originally from Laem Rang subdistrict in Bueng Na Rang district, had recently moved in with his son, Mr. Prawit at the rented residence.

Initial investigations revealed a troubling domestic history. Mr. Prawit, known to have suffered from mental illness for over a decade and undergoing psychiatric treatment, was also reportedly addicted to drugs. Neighbours stated that violent altercations between father and son were a regular occurrence, with Mr. Prawit frequently assaulting his father during fits of rage.

On the night of 12 May, around midnight, nearby residents reported hearing a loud argument between the two, followed by cries for help from the father. Then, all went silent.

At approximately 06:00 the next morning, Mr. Prawit rode his bicycle to alert Chalawan Rescue Unit, claiming someone had died in the house under unknown circumstances. However, when emergency responders arrived, they found Mr. Sompong deceased, with grievous head and facial injuries suggesting a violent assault.

Police detained Mr. Prawit as a prime suspect. Bloodstains were visible on his clothing, and no signs of forced entry were found at the property, indicating that no third party could have entered the home. Mr. Prawit has so far given only partial admissions during questioning.

The victim’s body has been sent for a forensic post-mortem examination at Buddhachinaraj Hospital to determine the exact cause of death. Police continue to investigate as they build a case against the suspect.
