It's incredible to me that this debate has gotten so far off course that people don't even understand that the protests were about immigration and the crackdown on both legal and illegal immigrants. Hence the pure silliness of asking why people are waving the Mexican flag!

That's what they did.  What they were convicted of is irrelevant.
