What was meant to be a joyous occasion turned into tragedy when 63-year-old Mauricio “Morrie” Pulhin, a respected employee of the Philippines House of Representatives, was fatally shot during his daughter's birthday celebration. The incident occurred on Sunday, June 15, on Father’s Day, within a gated community in Barangay Commonwealth, Quezon City.

Pulhin, who served as the technical staff chief of the House Committee on Ways and Means, was targeted by two unidentified assailants riding a motorcycle. The attack unfolded at around 2:55 p.m., when the gunmen approached Pulhin and shot him at close range in front of his family. In their escape, the assailants also fired at a security guard manning the subdivision, marking a brazen disregard for life.

House Speaker Martin Romualdez and Ways and Means Committee Chair Rep. Joey Salceda have expressed deep sorrow and outrage over the incident. “Director Pulhin’s murder was shocking in its brazenness; he was shot in front of his family, in his gated neighborhood. This heinous act must be condemned and its perpetrators brought to justice at once,” stated Salceda.

Pulhin was urgently rushed to the FEU-NRMF Hospital after sustaining critical injuries. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. In light of this tragic event, the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) has launched an intensive investigation. A special task force has been formed to track down the perpetrators, with witness interviews and leads currently being pursued vigorously.

Speaker Romualdez called for a comprehensive and unbiased investigation, emphasizing the need to explore all possible motives, including those linked to Pulhin's professional role. He paid homage to Pulhin as a “long-serving and dedicated public servant” known for his professionalism and integrity. “We condemn this brutal act of violence in the strongest possible terms,” Romualdez declared.

Addressing the gravity of the situation, Romualdez offered condolences to Pulhin’s family and expressed a shared sense of grief and outrage with his colleagues in the House Secretariat. He urged for collective vigilance and justice, not only for Pulhin but for all Filipinos who have suffered from senseless violence. "This crime must not go unanswered. Justice must prevail," Romualdez affirmed.

The QCPD is appealing to the public for any information that could aid in solving this case, urging those with details to contact local police or call the Philippine National Police helpline. As the investigation proceeds, the community remains in shock, mourning the loss of a distinguished figure who dedicated his life to public service.
