Report Thai Man Urges Caution After Fish Bone Pierces Wife’s Throat

In a startling reminder of the hidden dangers in everyday meals, a Thai man, Suriyan Buppa-art, has issued a warning to food lovers after a sharp fish bone pierced through his wife's throat. The incident occurred in Phetchabun, and Suriyan shared the alarming images on social media on June 17, quickly capturing widespread attention.

 

The post, which included pictures of his wife's injury and the extracted fish bone, went viral among Thai netizens, sparking surprise at the serious risk posed by something as seemingly benign as a fish bone.

 

Suriyan later provided further details through interviews, recounting how the incident unfolded. About two weeks prior, his wife had craved fish soup, leading them to prepare a dish with two-spot catfish, known locally as Pla Kayaeng, and another eel-like fish called Pla Lod. As she savoured the meal, she unknowingly swallowed a hidden bone.

 

Initially, she attempted to remove the lodged bone by eating rice, hoping it would help push it down. Unfortunately, the discomfort persisted, prompting her to seek medical help. An initial hospital visit, however, yielded no findings of a foreign object in her throat following an X-ray.

 

Believing the bone might have dissolved naturally, they returned home, albeit with her still in pain. The continuing discomfort led to a second hospital visit, but once again, X-rays showed no trace of the bone. Frustrated by the lack of answers, she opted for a pain relief patch to ease her neck pain.

 

Before using the patch, she massaged the painful area, only to be shocked as the bone emerged through her skin. Suriyan rushed her back to the hospital, where doctors performed surgery to remove the two-centimetre bone. The attending doctor remarked that it was the first case of its kind he had encountered in his career.

 

Reflecting on the ordeal, Suriyan shared their experience online to raise awareness and warn others about the potential dangers of fish bones, emphasizing the importance of caution when eating fish dishes. His story serves as a poignant reminder to be vigilant, even with everyday meals, as unexpected hazards can lurk in the unlikeliest places.

One reason I hate eating whole fish, picking out around the bones to get some meat, just give me a good sized filleted fish every time.

Seems more like his story is a poignant reminder that the you can never trust the hospitals even with xrays given they failed to detect anything and did not bother to probe into her throat to see if her complaints were accurate.

If an X ray couldn't detect that, was there a malfunction, or was the malfunction in the doctor looking at it?

Thai people are so lazy and sloppy with cutting meat it doesn't surprise me. If you ever buy roasted chicken you need to make sure you tell them not to cut it or they'll take their clever and chop it up in random pieces and smash through bones leaving little fragments everywhere.

Never had a problem with chopped roasted chicken and have been eating them for 30 years.

 

It is not random chopping and there are not bone fragments everywhere, get a grip on your imagination.

30 years and you never saw this? they hack through the femur and every other bone leaving fragments.

I have found bones in a frozen salmon I purchased from a well known suprermarket.  Since then I eat any fish in LOS slowly and carefully. Also, no fish soup for me.

You  must be lucky then, I used to have my Chicken chopped and found many times bits of bone. Now buy it without chopping.

that's a shot from that video above. It's a total mess. The drumstick is mostly intact but they're so sloppy they'll sometimes chop the head of the bone and make fragments. You need to keep a close eye on them in case they do it without asking.

Literally today I got some chopped fried chicken with bone fragments. It's a 5 star chicken run by a village woman.

 

I was looking to get the fastest thing possible so I got "Khao Man Gai" with the fried chicken. She must have run out of breast pieces and threw in some random chunks. I tried to pull off some of the meat but still got bone fragments.  Look at how the bones were cut right though. Nasty.

 

This is pretty normal for very "northern" people. Try buying some of the various foods in bags at the market and you'll often find pieces of chicken (or fish) where they hack it up at random angles without any care.

 

I rate that meal 0.5/5.

I prefer un-processed fish, I get mine from the local wet fish market, still alive and swimming when they package it to take home.

I really don't like fish much so about the only thing I can stand are a little shrimp or the McDonalds fried fish sandwich. It's a very good sandwich for people who usually wouldn't eat fish or kids even. Yes it's processed and presents as kind of fake but it's still good.
