Subic Bay Freeport is set to launch pure battery electric buses (PBEBs) this year, marking a significant step towards carbon neutrality. The initiative aligns with the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority’s (SBMA) aspiration to become the first carbon-neutral economic zone in the Philippines.

SBMA Chairman Eduardo Jose Aliño announced that 10 PBEB units arrived on 13th May and underwent successful road tests on 27th May, proving to be accessible and comfortable for individuals with disabilities.

The electric buses were acquired from Golden Asia Automotive Builders, Inc. and manufactured by Xiamen King Long United Automotive Industry Co. Ltd., a veteran in the bus manufacturing sector with over 30 years of experience.

In support of this eco-friendly transition, fast electric vehicle charging stations (EVCs) will be constructed at the SBMA Maintenance and Transportation Department’s motorpool. Additionally, a charging station donated by the Department of Energy will be placed along Argonaut Highway.

To accommodate the new transport system, SBMA has allocated P10 million for rehabilitating and constructing bus stops and terminals. This development will feature:

  • Eight stops in the Central Business District
  • Sixteen stops at the Cubi Area
  • Six stops near theme parks
  • Eighteen stops in the Binictican Housing area
  • Ten stops in the Kalayaan Housing area

The project aims for completion by December 2025. SBMA's broader environmental strategy also targets a 30-percent reduction in carbon emissions by 2030 and achieving net-zero emissions by 2040. These efforts include the P250-million Carbon Neutral Port Project, which introduces shore power connections for ships.

The introduction of these electric buses is a crucial part of Subic Freeport's ongoing commitment to sustainable development and reducing its carbon footprint.
