Chiang Mai Provincial Public Health Office has issued an urgent public health warning following the discovery of unregistered herbal remedies containing dangerous steroid substances being sold door-to-door across northern Thai communities.

The alarm was raised after village health volunteers (Aor Sor Mor) reported individuals carrying baskets and selling herbal medicines without proper registration at local villages, community events, hospitals and even funerals. Samples were collected and analysed by the Region 1 Medical Sciences Centre, which confirmed the presence of synthetic steroids in the products.

One such product, marketed as a “traditional herbal remedy for nerve compression and joint pain”, was found with labels in both Thai and Burmese. Authorities also noted similar illegal sales occurring in nearby provinces, including Phayao, Lamphun and Chiang Rai.

Chiang Mai health officials are urging the public to remain vigilant. “If anyone sees individuals carrying baskets selling herbal medicines, especially in informal settings, please report it immediately to the Chiang Mai Public Health Office, local hospitals or district health centres,” the statement reads.

Steroids, which are hormone-like substances produced by the adrenal glands, are commonly used in medical treatment but only under strict supervision. In Thailand, steroids are classified as controlled medications due to their potential for serious side effects, including high blood pressure, diabetes, osteoporosis, and immune suppression. They may only be legally dispensed with a doctor’s prescription.

Officials have warned that the unauthorised use of steroids hidden in herbal products poses a significant health risk, especially for individuals with chronic conditions who may unknowingly consume these substances over long periods.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation and are coordinating with neighbouring provinces to halt the spread of these dangerous products.
