In response to forecasts of an early monsoon, the Thai government has ramped up its flood preparedness strategy. Deputy Prime Minister Prasert Jantararuangtong spearheaded a vital meeting at the Royal Irrigation Department's Smart Water Operation Center to coordinate emergency efforts against the looming threat.

With 1,652 locations identified as flood-prone, areas like Chiang Rai and Nong Khai are particularly vulnerable, already experiencing heavy rains. As storms are expected to persist through October, this plan is critical to mitigate the impacts of flash floods and landslides.

The government’s multi-agency approach involves the Royal Irrigation Department (RID), Thai Meteorological Department, National Water Resources Office, and several others. They are tasked with integrating weather forecasts into water management strategies, aiming to issue alerts at least 2-3 days in advance.

Authorities face the pressing task of inspecting water infrastructure, clearing obstructions, and positioning essential equipment such as pumps and boats for rapid deployment. The Department of Mineral Resources continues to assess risks like landslides to enhance regional readiness.

Coordination extends to building levees and engaging with Myanmar on environmental issues like sediment runoff. Local administrations will collaborate with military units to dredge rivers and remove structures hindering water flow.

Public awareness is a major focus, with plans to enhance communication through cell broadcast alerts and other channels. The aim is to keep citizens informed and ready, while counteracting misinformation during critical times.

Post-flood, rapid assessment and compensation for damage to homes, agriculture, and infrastructure will be essential. Efforts to clean, repair, and restore communities, particularly isolated areas, will be supported by government agencies, NGOs, and private entities.

Deputy Prime Minister Prasert highlighted the need for robust action plans, ensuring timely aid to those affected. With the monsoon looming, the nation's preparedness measures are crucial in safeguarding lives and livelihoods across Thailand.

Same thing every year. The monsoon is well under way, flooding has started ... and The Guvamint calls a meeting to consider the possibility of anti-flooding measures at an unknown date in the future. Pathetic. Never changes.

Ping River was widened and dredged up in places.

Floods just occurred in China. Fingers crossed for Thailand.

Much of the flood damage in China is being caused by the release of water from dams and some dams completely collapsing because of record rainfall.

Here is a crazy idea!  How about BEFORE the monsoon season begins, the government cleans and clears the ditches and pipes designed to help the water flow away harmlessly!!  Also, a public service campaign, "Your litter clogs the pipes that prevent flooding! Take pride in your country, help your neighbors, STOP littering!"

Too late for 2026? 2027/ ETC. ETC. ??? Can we agree that people wading around in filthy water, human and animal waste, with their homes, possessions, and vehicles ruined, might have full attention and be in (very rare in Thailand) "solution mode??"
