Are you sure that is a 4x4, I would like to see the 4x4 decals, as you do make things up, all the time...........😉

In addition, there is absolutely no evidence that the vehicle is even in Thailand. A Google Lens search just revealed that Susan nicked that image from one of the many used car websites in India. So it's an old photo and the car is located in another country.

Incredible, another one of your extremely detailed, insightful and philosophically well-rounded responses. Can always rely upon you to add so much value to the discourse.

Whatever he's making in his retirement is more than the average local makes here anyway. Just to live here you need to make at least the minimum, or at least the locals think you do. No one knows how

Intentionally blurred to hide the fact that the vehicle is in fact in India and not in Thailand.

Oh wow, look at you, the fearless lone wolf who avoids tourists and idiots like it’s your life’s mission. Such a hard man, pounding your chest online while trembling at a harmless comment. Tell us more about your heroic crusade.

Starts a topic about village life then abuses an expert on villages.

Some people get to a point in life where they realise material items that are fancy or expensive make zero difference to their life , so they have no wish to own them.

Pretty sure several who look poor etc are probably very well off. My Thai neighbours before in samui never done anything apart from open their small shop daily beside the 10 small houses they rented out . Guy would walk about wearing shorts and flip flops daily looking homeless. He had over 100 million in the bank and the banks would come to give him gifts every so often. He offered to buy his daughter a brand new Mercedes if she went to university in Bangkok , but she told him she didn't like Bangkok so stayed in samui. He bought her a brand new fortuner instead and paid in cash.

You pose such silly questions on a form that are for foreigners ex-pats how on God‘s green earth would any of us know what a village Thai person thinks of a foreigner living there then when you get your answers you act like you’re also so mighty and knowing about everything you ask some of the most stupidest questions I’ve ever read on this form truly unbelievable you need to get a life dude and your replies are almost as uninteresting as your questions get out in public more Life is good TIT

A fair comment though. To get an accurate answer you would need to talk to Thais.

You can have a good life on a right budget in rural districts and do not need anything else than a roof above your head, and a motorbike. Eat Thai food 5k a month at most, and 1000 baht electric.

Two persons 10k give or take, should give them 30k to save pr month, which will be 300k a year if you include some spending for clothes once and awhile alike flipp flopps, a few 100 baht shorts and t-shirts. 20k for agent and a trip to Pattaya.

Living  in the paradise S Cal

I wouldn’t want to live that cheaply.  Many single people live her on 3,500 baht a month and are very happy.  Am lucky enough to have more. And am very happy to have extra money for donations.

I lived in a small village in surin years ago.I speak thai well and normally everyone was nice and polite.

If a cheap Charlie came to the village everyone knows that and they told me so.Anyway not my business. But i feel sorry for the foreigner they talked about. When these foreigners visit me with their gf she sat down and complained about everything.I told their gf to stop gossip and better looking themself. After that they normally not visit me again and then i was a bad foreigner.

Its a fair point to make, after all, they are the people you believe should know. Or so your question states!

Another astounding answer from you with so much valuable insight. It doesn't get any more enlightening than this.

Why would you wish to know this info? Quite frankly its none of your business what the Thai's think or otherwise of foreigners living in their village.

I prefer a good poor person over a wealthy, fat sucker and I truly believe Thais do too...

Harrisfan has a point...

I’ve noticed there are some older foreigners who choose to settle in rural villages of Thailand on low retirement incomes. They often rely solely on a fixed government or state pension, may have little or no savings, shop mostly at fresh markets to keep costs down, and live quite frugally, sometimes wearing older or inexpensive clothing that doesn't present them so well.

I’m curious how local Thai communities perceive these foreigners. Are they generally accepted as part of the community? Do locals look down on them for living so cheaply and trying to emulate a very inexpensive local lifestyle? Do they wish these foreigners would return to their home countries? Do they feel these foreigners should be spending more to help the local economy or contributing something financially to the community? Or are they mostly indifferent and unconcerned either way?

In my experience this is mainly what they think.

Sorry, but your question deserves such an answer. You can receive as many answers as there are such villages with older foreigners living in rural areas. How long have you been in Thailand, do you speak Thai?

Villagers will love one person and not like another one without you knowing the reason.

By the way, the immigration laws do not allow people with extremely low income.

Simply consider that the government recently raised the minimum daily wage to THB 400 in Bangkok.

When workers come to our place, we pay them 400 to 500 bahts a day, we grow rubber trees and some fruit plus some rice, so yes indeed it's upcountry (Loei province).

I'm 73 years old, married, living in my wife's village and cannot answer your question.

I arrived in 2003. Furthermore, I can speak, read, and write in Thai, but will never claim to know or understand them 100%.
“Do they feel these foreigners should be spending more to help the local economy or contributing something financially to the community?” That's an interesting and particularly philosophically well-rounded question. Do you really think that the people in those rural, remote areas ask themselves such metaphysical questions?

And you started your post with another interesting point: ” I’ve noticed there are some older foreigners who choose to settle in rural villages of Thailand on low retirement incomes…. ”

You noticed…, in that case, why didn't you simply ask?
