In a startling series of thefts in Bangkok, a 48-year-old tailor, Weerachai—known as Noom—has been arrested by Bang Khun Thian Police for allegedly stealing from unlocked cars to address his mounting debts. The announcement came during a late-night press conference held by Police Major General Khomsit Rangsai.

Weerachai targeted vehicles parked in the Ekachai area, seizing items worth over 130,000 baht (approximately £2,900). Among the recovered possessions were a revered amulet, a golden frame, and a grey Keeway Versilia 150 motorcycle without a licence plate, all linking him to the recent thefts.

His method involved taking advantage of unlocked cars, quickly grabbing valuables before making a swift escape on his motorcycle. The pilfered items included a patterned shirt, trousers, and a helmet, with thefts taking place on June 14, June 22, and July 3. The missing items spanned amulets, jewellery, and cash.

One victim, 32-year-old vegetable vendor Thipapa, vividly recounted her June 12 ordeal. Whilst delivering her goods on Ekachai 33 Road, during a brief exchange with a customer, her wallet vanished. It was later discovered and returned by a Good Samaritan at Wat Singha.

Expressing her relief, Thipapa thanked the police for apprehending the culprit and urged others to remain vigilant against similar threats.

During questioning, Weerachai confessed to the crimes, citing financial desperation as his motive. He lamented unpaid tailoring jobs that left him unable to cover rent and other essential debts. He admitted to using the stolen funds to pay his workers, opening car doors without even checking if anyone was inside.

Police Major General Khomsit urged the public to ensure their car doors are locked, emphasising the vulnerability of remote key systems to opportunistic crimes.

As the investigation continues, Weerachai is facing charges of nighttime burglary with a vehicle. He is currently held at Bang Khun Thian Police Station as legal proceedings unfold. This case serves as a stark reminder of the necessary precautions one must take amidst challenging economic times.
