In a disturbing incident in Marikina City, a 48-year-old crew member of a convenience store has been arrested on charges of raping a 15-year-old girl. The suspect, known as "Joy," was taken into custody by patrolling officers enforcing the city-wide curfew in Barangay Concepcion Uno.

The alleged assault occurred in the restroom of a petrol station store. Police officers, on routine patrol, approached the victim's sibling waiting outside the women's restroom. The officers grew suspicious when "Joy" exited the restroom, followed shortly by the visibly distressed victim.

According to police reports, the young girl alleged that "Joy" had kissed and inappropriately touched her before committing the rape. Additionally, it was claimed that he offered her PHP 150 (around 90 Thai Baht) after the assault. Conversely, the suspect denied the allegations, insisting that he was merely using the restroom to shave because it offered better lighting.

"Joy" explained his actions, saying, “I didn’t know anyone was inside when I entered. I told her to hurry because I didn’t want someone to walk in while I was shaving.” He further denied handing over any money, suggesting that the girl possibly exchanged coins for notes elsewhere.

He continued, “I’ve known that child for some time; she often asks for money. Kids sometimes gather coins and come to us to exchange them. I’m not sure where she got that money from; perhaps she exchanged it at another store.”

Authorities have charged "Joy" under Republic Act 8353, The Anti-Rape Law of 1997. This law in the Philippines strictly penalises acts of sexual violence, aiming to protect individuals and ensure justice for victims.

The arrest highlights ongoing concerns about the safety and protection of minors, especially in public spaces. It also raises serious questions about the vigilance and protocols at convenience stores and fuel stations operating late at night. The community is keenly watching how this case unfolds, hoping for a swift and just resolution.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for heightened awareness and preventive measures to protect vulnerable individuals. The police urge community members to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities promptly to help maintain safety and security for all.

As the investigation continues, authorities are committed to ensuring a thorough and fair process. The suspect remains in custody, pending further legal proceedings.
