A fire broke out in the server room of the computer centre at Nakornping Hospital in Chiang Mai on the afternoon of 16 July, prompting emergency evacuations of patients and staff from Building 1 on Chotana Road, Mae Rim District.

The blaze was first reported at approximately 13:30 when smoke was seen billowing from the hospital’s IT department. Hospital personnel, including nurses and stretcher staff, rushed to evacuate patients from nearby wards. Essential medical equipment was also hurriedly removed from the building during the operation.

Initial attempts to extinguish the flames by staff using chemical fire extinguishers proved challenging, as thick smoke continued to fill the area. Fire crews in breathing apparatus, were able to extinguish the fire and remove the smouldering equipment to outside. PPV (positive pressure ventilation fans) were used to clear all smoke.

By 16:00, the situation had been brought under control, and the hospital began transferring patients back into the building. No injuries or casualties were reported and normal hospital operations resumed shortly thereafter.

Preliminary investigations point to a short circuit in an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) battery unit within the server room as the likely cause of the fire. Authorities from the hospital and the Chiang Mai forensic science department are continuing their investigation to confirm the exact source of the ignition.

Officials have confirmed that safety protocols were followed promptly and effectively, ensuring the wellbeing of patients and staff throughout the emergency.
