Chaos erupted at Mexico City’s Benito Juarez International Airport as an Aeromexico plane narrowly avoided a collision with a Delta jet during landing. FlightRadar24 data showed that the planes narrowly avoided a collision within 200 feet on the same runway.

Aeromexico Flight 1631 shockingly flew over Delta Flight 590, which was accelerating for takeoff. The Delta crew acted fast, aborting their takeoff at a speed of around 60 mph after noticing the unexpected landing, resulting in the aircraft returning safely to the gate.

In dramatic recordings from air traffic control, the Delta pilot can be heard expressing disbelief, capturing the tense moments. Aviation analysts speculated that a communication breakdown, possibly involving mixed instructions for the aircraft operating on parallel runways, could have caused the incident.

Delta Air Lines and Aeromexico were quick to assure that safety remains their top priority and confirmed they are fully cooperating with authorities. Delta praised its crew for quick actions thanks to extensive training, while Aeromexico endorsed a thorough investigation into the startling event.

The Mexican Aviation Authority has yet to comment officially. Investigators are focusing on communication protocols to understand if ambiguities or misunderstandings led to this close call.

As the investigation unfolds, experts remain on alert to rectify any lapses in communication to prevent future mishaps. The focus now is firmly on ensuring skies remain a safe space for all.

No mention of control tower contact with either aircraft?

The control tower should have complete visibility of all ground taxing aircraft and arriving aircraft.

When I listen to recordings of ATC and pilots talking, the sound quality is atrocious, I can hardly understand a word.

Is that how they really sound to each other, or is it just poorly quality recordings that I get to listen to????

Aviation incident news is a quite frequent recently - quite a worry.

Fortunate that the Delta flight started rolling on the generously allowed displaced threshold section, quite a way back from the touchdown area.

Shouldn't happen of course, but humans make mistakes.  There's a system called ASMGCS that can give audible and visual warnings in this type of situation.  This is a common system around the world.  Maybe a fairly major international airport like this should have this.  The link just shows the US-based system deployment, but its usage is common in most developed countries.
