President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. reassured overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in India of their central place in the Philippine government's international agenda. This commitment was highlighted during his visit to New Delhi, which marks the beginning of a five-day trip at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

During a gathering at the Taj Mahal Hotel, President Marcos emphasised the importance of maintaining connections with the Filipino diaspora. "Wherever we venture, meeting our Filipino community remains a top priority," he asserted, expressing that these interactions bring great joy and serve as a vital reminder of the government’s mission to uplift the lives of Filipinos worldwide.

The President praised the Filipino community in India for their unity and professionalism. Primarily composed of Filipino women married to Indian nationals and professionals across various sectors, this community has been instrumental in promoting a positive image of the Philippines.

Though India currently lacks a dedicated Migrant Workers Office, Marcos assured the attendees that the Philippine Embassy and honorary consulates in key cities are actively addressing their needs. In a significant announcement, he revealed that forthcoming agreements with India include a Social Security Agreement, which aims to provide enhanced protection and benefits for Filipinos in the region.

Marcos also spotlighted ongoing government efforts to improve conditions for OFWs. Over 1.2 million have already benefitted from the airport OFW Lounge, designed to ease travel experiences. Enhancements to both international and regional airports are underway, alongside strengthened reintegration programmes for returning workers.

The introduction of an e-visa system has simplified processes, while the recent visa-free entry scheme for Indian tourists is a reciprocal nod towards fostering stronger ties. Notably, direct flights spearheaded by Air India are set to resume, further bolstering connectivity between the two nations.

"Our engagement with this country, now the fourth-largest economy globally, is intensifying," Marcos noted. In the days ahead, the Philippine delegation will engage with both the Indian government and leading enterprises, exploring avenues for investment and job creation back home.

As he reaches the midpoint of his term, President Marcos continues to focus on economic growth, highlighted by the Philippines’ GDP growth of 5.4% in the first quarter of 2025. Sharing his gratitude, he conveyed, "Your support is not only for our administration but ultimately for our country and beloved Republic."

This high-profile visit underlines the growing partnership between the Philippines and India, with a shared commitment to supporting their respective communities and fostering robust bilateral relations.
