Strong Baht and Safety Concerns Threaten Thai Tourism Recovery

Thailand’s tourism industry is feeling the strain as a combination of economic and safety factors dampens visitor numbers. The baht’s recent appreciation has made travel to Thailand more expensive for foreigners, while concerns over scams, human trafficking, and discrimination—particularly among Chinese tourists—are eroding confidence. The “Nihao-Sawadee” campaign and the government’s new “safe travel stamp” aim to rebuild trust, but have yet to deliver a significant rebound. Tourist arrivals in the first half of 2025 have dropped to 16.6 million from 17.5 million in the same period last year, with Chinese visitors falling by a third.
