Border forces engaged in a fierce shootout with a suspected drug trafficking gang on 15 August, resulting in one suspect killed and the seizure of more than four million methamphetamine tablets.

According to the Pha Muang Task Force, intelligence indicated that a large shipment of illicit drugs was being smuggled from neighbouring Myanmar into Thailand. In response, the 4th Cavalry Company of the Chaiyanupap Special Task Unit and the 3207 Ranger Company of the 32nd Ranger Regiment were deployed to patrol the Thai-Myanmar border near the Pang Tong checkpoint in Ban Nong Tao, Mon Pin Subdistrict, Fang District, Chiang Mai.

Around 07:00, authorities spotted a group of 30–40 individuals carrying backpacks on foot. When officers attempted to identify and search the group, the suspects opened fire with unidentified firearms, prompting a 15-minute exchange of gunfire. Reinforcements were later called in to secure the area.

An hour later, the traffickers returned to the scene, apparently attempting to recover drugs left behind, triggering another gunfight that lasted over 30 minutes. All officers remained unharmed, while the suspects ultimately retreated.

Colonel Maitree Srisantiea, Chief of Staff of the Pha Muang Task Force, later surveyed the remote and rain-soaked site, confirming the seizure of 42 modified backpacks, each containing roughly 100,000 methamphetamine tablets. The total haul amounted to approximately 4,200,000 pills.

Authorities also discovered the body of one trafficker, along with a homemade long-barrel shotgun, ammunition and spent cartridges. The Pha Muang Task Force has coordinated with Fang Police Station to proceed with legal formalities.

The operation highlights ongoing challenges in combating cross-border drug trafficking in northern Thailand.
