'TouristDigiPay’ Crypto-to-Baht Pilot Initiative to Boost Tourism Spending

Thailand’s Ministry of Finance has unveiled “TouristDigiPay,” a pilot initiative enabling tourists to convert cryptocurrency into baht via SEC-regulated operators and electronic wallets managed by the Bank of Thailand. The 18-month trial is expected to boost tourist spending by around 10%, potentially injecting over 175 billion baht into the economy. Spending is facilitated through QR codes at participating merchants; large vendors are capped at 500,000 baht monthly, small vendors at 50,000, following a KYC/Vetting process. Strong anti‑money laundering safeguards—including KYC, CDD, and blacklists—are embedded in the system. If successful, the program could expand beyond 2025 to support larger transactions like real estate and yacht purchases.
