Police in Bangkok have recovered the bodies of a couple who jumped into the Chao Phraya River together from Rama VII Bridge.

The discovery was made on 22 August, when police were alerted to a male body floating mid-river in the Rat Burana district. Officers from Bang Kho Laem Police Station responded promptly with a water patrol unit to investigate the scene.

The male victim was found wearing a long-sleeved white shirt, black trousers and black leather shoes. His body was face down in the water. No identification or personal belongings were recovered, and there were no visible signs of physical assault. Preliminary assessments suggest he had been deceased for approximately two days.

Around the same time, the body of a female victim was also found, floating face-up. She was dressed in a long-sleeved shirt, black trousers and black trainers. She too is believed to have been deceased for around two days.

Relatives later confirmed the identities of both victims. The couple, aged 62, were husband and wife.

According to reports, on the evening of 20 August, at around 20:00, the couple was seen holding hands on Rama VII Bridge. Witnesses reported that they climbed over the bridge’s railing and jumped into the river together. A passing motorcyclist witnessed the incident. A search at that time failed to locate any sign of the two and was later called off.

Police have handed the bodies for detailed examination at Siriraj Hospital’s forensic department. After post-mortem procedures are completed, relatives will be allowed to collect the bodies for funeral arrangements.

The reasons behind the couple’s apparent decision to end their lives together remain unclear, and authorities continue to investigate.
