In a dramatic turn of events, an inmate who escaped from Nonthaburi Provincial Prison near Bangkok has been apprehended, reportedly driven by a longing to see his five-month-old child.

The daring escape unfolded on the night of Saturday, 23rd August, when 33-year-old Anuchit Sooksud broke free while working at a coffee shop run by the prison. The Department of Corrections immediately sought public assistance in locating him.

Anuchit, serving a one-year sentence for attempted theft, had only four months left. Assigned to the prison's Hubpoei Coffee Shop, he seized a moment of opportunity, stealing a prison official’s motorcycle and vanishing into the night while still wearing his orange prison uniform.

Efforts to track him began swiftly, with Mueang Nonthaburi Police reviewing security footage. The next clue emerged beneath Maha Chesadabodindranusorn Bridge, where his discarded uniform was found. However, Anuchit remained elusive.

The chase led officers to Ang Thong province, where Anuchit was arrested at a relative’s home at 2 pm yesterday, 24th August. Once in custody, he initially claimed bullying by fellow inmates was his motive for escape. Skeptical, the officers pressed further until he confessed his true reason: a deep yearning to see his newborn.

Anuchit’s mother, speaking at the police station, expressed sympathy for her son’s feelings but urged him to complete his sentence for a proper reunion with his family.

Consequently, his escape and theft have resulted in additional charges. Anuchit now faces a transfer to the more secure Khao Bin Prison in Ratchaburi province, though the exact extension of his sentence remains undetermined.

This incident highlights the emotional strains of imprisonment and the lengths one might go for family, reminding us of the complex human stories behind the bars.
