Thailand Waives M81 Toll for King’s Cup Football Fans

In a boost for sports enthusiasts, the Department of Highways has announced that Thailand's M81 motorway will be toll-free from 3pm on Friday, 29 August to 9am on Wednesday, 10 September. This initiative coincides with the 51st King’s Cup international football tournament, set to take place from 1 to 9 September at Kanchanaburi Stadium, also known as Kleebbua Stadium.

The toll waiver on this 96-kilometre stretch, connecting Bang Yai in Nonthaburi to Kanchanaburi, is designed to streamline travel for fans eager to support their teams. It aims not only to enhance ease of movement but also to promote sports tourism and stimulate local economies in the region.

Only four-wheel vehicles will benefit from this toll-free period, with a speed limit set at 80km/h to ensure safety. Drivers can access the motorway through key toll plazas, including Bang Yai, Nakhon Chai Si, and Kanchanaburi, while the Si Sa Thong Plaza will be closed during this trial period.

Officials explain that the move supports regional connectivity and offers motorists an alternative to avoid the congestion caused by ongoing construction on Rama II Road. By creating a smoother travel experience, the initiative is expected to attract more visitors to the local area, benefiting businesses in Nonthaburi, Nakhon Pathom, Ratchaburi, and Kanchanaburi.

Motorists are encouraged to plan their journeys, ensure their vehicles are in good condition, and adhere to traffic regulations and signs. The Department emphasises that the motorway will provide a safe and efficient route during this period, marking a significant step forward in expanding Thailand’s expressway network.

For any inquiries or updates, drivers can reach out to:

  • Department of Highways hotline: 1586
  • Motorway Call Centre: 1586 (press 7)
  • M81 Call Centre (24/7): 092-280-8181

This free access follows a similar initiative earlier this month, when tolls were waived across Greater Bangkok on 11 and 12 August to celebrate National Mother’s Day. Drivers were able to travel toll-free on 63 booths across three major expressways, demonstrating Thailand’s commitment to facilitating smooth travel during significant events.

As fans head to Kanchanaburi Stadium for the King’s Cup, this toll-free period provides an excellent opportunity for football lovers to enjoy the tournament without the added cost of motorway fees. By removing these barriers, Thailand continues to support its vibrant sporting culture and regional tourism.

Visitors and locals alike are urged to make the most of this opportunity, explore the region, and enjoy the thrilling matches ahead. With a little planning, the journey to the King’s Cup promises to be as exciting as the tournament itself.
