Krungsri facial recognition

Featured Replies

I make a >50K transfer from my Krung Sri accounts at least once a month.  This has been a quick painless experience using their website.  Of course, that's all going away in a little over a month, so I thought I would make this month's transfer using the mobile app.  What a disaster! I made dozens of attempts at taking a selfie.  Most of them gave an error message to change location, though a few complained about my eyes being closed or my mouth open.  After a certain number of attempts it imposes a timeout.  I eventually managed to make the transfer by going outside for the photo and making another dozen or so attempts.  I'm really hoping this was a one-off glitch, rather than what we can come to expect from October.

I assume you were first time registering for the facial recognition, which involves all those positions like blinking - look left/right etc.

Once registered the facial scan is just a selfie, same as with Kasikorn, and it works well.

Other banks are a disaster, but Krungsri and Kasikorn work well

Well, I have the same problem. I have done the facial registration long time ago (I think right in the beginning when it was required). It has been working smoothly for long time but since few month, I am facing this problems. Around 3 months ago, as I needed to proceed a big transfer (500k) and I was not sure I could proceed such transfer amount from the app, I went to a Krungsri branch and told them that I need to do that transfer. it was a Saturday and they told as the transfer for another bank (Kasikorn), it will be proceed on the Monday only. But they asked "why don't you do it from the app". Then I explained the difficulties I have with the facial recognition. They could see by themselves and tried to help me. Finally, after several attempts, it works. They also told me that since the first registration, maybe my face changed and they did the registration again. But the problem remains.

Krungsri is not my daily banking. I using SCB for day to day transactions and works good. One problem for me with Krungsri face recognization is that you can't wear glasses. During the process of payment, as mentioned, it ask you "turn your face left, right, open your mouth..." but I can't just read this instructions without my glasses....

Actually, no.  I registered probably over a year ago at my local branch.  I don't recall there being any changing position involved - just a simple photograph.  This was, however, my first time of using the app.  I've had no trouble taking selfies for other applications.  However, this was problematic to say the least.

Since when does SCB have a working facial recognition system for foreigners?

Krungsri doesn't have those instructions for me, just a straight forward selfie, and last time I needed it I challenged the system and didn't remove my glasses, and to my surprise it worked.

You are right. SCB does not have facial recognition for foreigners. I have signed the exemption of facial recognition. I am confused with the biometrics from my iPhone. Any transaction (open app, QR payment...) are using my face recognition instead password.

Good to hear about the glasses. I will try next time I am transferring above 50k

That exemption was invalidated about a month or so ago, and they are unable to activate the facial recognition for foreigners.
Maybe you didn't make a transaction above 50K since that date.
I hear there is a solution that you can contact the call centre, and they enable the exemption for 1 transaction or 1 hour, but I haven't bothered with it.

Yes, when they announced the cancellation of the exemption (it was end of June), I went to SCB branch and explained that it would be complicate for me to come to the bank every time I need to transfer more than 50K as I am also traveling a lot. Then, they extend my exemption until September, saying that there are excepting to be ready at that time to register facial recognition for foreigner and if not, they will extend again.

As September is next week, let's see.

Apart from unexpected payment, I have 2 monthly payments above 50k and both of them were proceeded without any issues the last few months

I had the same experience a few days ago, gave up and asked the wife to do the transfer from her account.

That worked well, so is it only a problem for foreigners?

You are lucky. As I am over 70, this app option is not available for me with Krungsri.

I think part of the recognition problem with selfie for bank transaction is that you are uncomfortably sitting in a low uncomfortable chair in front of the bank agent sitting higher with a camera mounted in a relative odd position behind a reflective thick plastic screen with overhead LED lighting, etc. Hardly what I would call an ideal studio photo shoot, especially when you are trying to take a passing selfie from wherever you are outside of the bank.

A finger print might be easier to duplicate.

A while back Krungsri sent me a message to attend a branch to set up facial (farcical) recognition and I did but my branch didn't know how to do it?

Krungsri is closing their Krungsri online services from 1st Oct 2025.

But current users of Krungsri online can move to Krungsri Biz online, free of charge.

That is their business online banking. I do not have business accounts with them, just 2 savings account. I was able to activate krungsri biz online.

You can register online if you have a valid debit card with Krungsri -

However, if they do so, do they lose their status (Krung Sri Exclusive, Private Bangkok) and associated benefits? I haven't been able to find an answer to this.

Sorry for this late post. But I think I have the solution for you. I just had the same problem, but it was fixed by doing the following:

If you use a dual SIM card phone, disable the SIM card not related to your account.

VPN must be turned off as well.

This worked for me, I had no issues after doing that, and my transfer limit rose to 2 mill baht in the process as well.
