The death toll in deadly landslide struck Pang Ung village in Mae Chaem District, Chiang Mai, early on the morning of 27 August, has risen to three people dead and six others missing, as heavy rains continued to batter the region.

Local officials confirmed the fatalities included one Thai woman and two migrant workers. Twelve others were injured, while more than a hundred homes were destroyed or severely damaged as tonnes of mud, rocks and debris cascaded down the hillside.

Scenes in the village remain chaotic and heart-breaking, with residents digging through the sludge in search of personal belongings and vehicles buried under mud. Roofs, timber beams, and household goods lie scattered across the devastated community.

Rescue teams, joined by administrative officers and local volunteers, have deployed heavy machinery to clear blocked roads and aid the search for the missing. But operations are hampered by the relentless rainfall, unstable slopes and the risk of further landslides.

Mae Chaem district chief, Kriengsak Buntapuan, warned that conditions remain extremely dangerous:

“Rain continues to fall almost all day, the mountain soil is saturated and flash floods are still pouring down. There is a high risk of another landslide at any time,” he said.

Authorities have urged villagers to evacuate to temporary shelters set up nearby until the situation stabilises. Relief centres are now providing food, water and essential supplies, while mobile medical teams are treating the injured and monitoring residents affected by the disaster.

Emergency teams are racing against time to locate the six people still unaccounted for.
