In a shocking incident in Udon Thani, a 28-year-old woman was reportedly assaulted by her former husband after refusing his requests for a vehicle and money. The altercation took place at a shop in the Nong Mek subdistrict of Nong Han district on 26th August.

CCTV footage showed Kritsanut approaching Namtan while she was busy repairing a phone. Holding a helmet, he proceeded to strike her with it before landing several punches to her face, ignoring her desperate pleas. A nearby shop owner intervened, restraining Kritsanut and urging him to cease his attack. Undeterred, Kritsanut left the premises, issuing threats to the owner.

In the aftermath, Namtan lodged a police report at the Nong Han Police Station, seeking legal recourse against Kritsanut. Police Lieutenant Samniang Sriprom is leading the investigation. Namtan, who makes a living selling goods at local markets and repairing phones, recounted the turbulent relationship with Kritsanut, whom she met nearly a year ago.

Initially appearing as a good partner, Kritsanut’s behaviour took a turn for the worse as Namtan’s pregnancy progressed. She discovered he had withdrawn 20,000 baht (approximately US$620) from her savings meant for their child's birth expenses, prompting her to end the relationship two months ago. However, Kritsanut’s harassment persisted.

On the day of the assault, Kritsanut sought to borrow her car, ostensibly to purchase methamphetamine. Fearing potential legal complications, Namtan refused. He then requested 11 baht (about US$0.34), a peculiar amount that raised her suspicions. It was only after the physical attack that she realised his likely intention was to use the money for online gambling.

Namtan expressed her heartache and disbelief over the incident, particularly as she had given birth just 13 days prior. “I am heartbroken and never imagined he would harm me like this. I want nothing more to do with him; he can go where he pleases. I will raise my child alone,” she stated resolutely.

This incident highlights the urgent need for awareness and action against domestic violence. The community and local authorities are urged to provide the necessary support and intervention to prevent future occurrences.

As the investigation unfolds, the case serves as a stark reminder of the complexities and challenges faced by those enduring domestic abuse. It underscores the importance of accessible support systems and legal measures to protect vulnerable individuals.

Further developments in the case are awaited, as local authorities continue their investigation to ensure justice for Namtan and her young child.
