Thai Influencer Halted from Spraying Waste at Border Protest

The Acting Prime Minister has intervened to stop an incendiary plan by a Thai social media influencer, who intended to escalate tensions by spraying waste at the Thai-Cambodian border in Sa Kaeo province.

With rising tensions along the Thai-Cambodian border, particularly in the Ban Nong Chan community of Khok Sung district, the Thai military maintains a vigilant presence. Historically, this area served as a refuge for Cambodians escaping conflict, with many reportedly staying on Thai land long after the conflicts ended. As the issue resurfaced due to recent border clashes, the Royal Thai Army (RTA) has moved to reinforce control, urging the return of Cambodians to their territory. This action has led to heightened tensions and daily protests.

Amidst this, influencer Guntouch “Gun” Pongpaiboonwet suggested a drastic measure on social media to deter Cambodian nationals from damaging fencing and antagonising Thai soldiers. Gun controversially proposed spraying waste from septic trucks on those who persisted in their protests.

His inflammatory suggestion followed a personal provocation from a Cambodian netizen, leading Gun to call for septic truck drivers to congregate at Ban Nong Chan. Despite the presence of 14 trucks ready to proceed with this stunt, the Thai military intervened around 10 a.m. on 28 August, preventing Gun from carrying out his plan. The military reasoned that such acts could incite further violence, a rationale Gun accepted.

Acting Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Phumtham Wechayachai condemned Gun’s proposition, highlighting the potential for international repercussions. He cautioned influencers to act more responsibly, warning that such actions could lead to the conflict being escalated to the World Court. Phumtham deliberately limited his commentary on the incident, wary of accusations similar to those once directed at PM Paetongtarn Shinawatra.

In a subsequent livestream, Gun stated his unwavering support for the Thai military and expressed frustration over the lack of recognition from the government. He maintained that his stunt was never meant to be realised, describing it as a demonstration of capability rather than intent. Gun and his team have shown tangible support at the border by providing essential equipment to military personnel.

The situation highlights the delicate nature of border conflicts and the powerful influence of social media personalities. As both countries navigate the complexities of their shared history and current tensions, calls for cooler heads and strategic diplomacy are more crucial than ever, with the eyes of both nations watching closely.
