Shock descended upon a Lampang public park after a retired soldier was found deceased on the morning of 2 September, having taken his own life in front of early-morning joggers. A handwritten note of apology was discovered at his home.

The incident occurred at approximately 7:15 at the Nong Krating public park in Bo Haeo sub-district. Police Lieutenant Colonel Thane Tanjankul, an investigation officer from Mueang Lampang Police Station, along with local patrol units and emergency responders from Lampang Hospital, rushed to the scene following reports of a death.

Upon arrival, authorities discovered the body of a man lying on his back in a pavilion by a pond. A revolver was found near his right hand. The victim had sustained a single gunshot wound to the right side of his head.

The deceased was identified as former Sergeant Major Somchai 78, a resident of Bo Haeo sub-district and a former soldier based at a local army camp.

Initial reports from his wife indicate that he was a regular at the park, visiting daily for his morning exercise. She stated that he had never previously expressed any signs of significant stress or mental distress. However, a note was found at their home addressed to a family member, which read: “Game, Waew, Dad is sorry. I have not been a good man.” It concluded with a message concerning a debt: “Waew, for the money I borrowed, please wait for the funeral benefit money.”

The precise motive for his action remains unclear. While police are investigating if underlying health issues were a factor, his wife mentioned he only suffered from leg pain and had no other known serious conditions.

The event has left the community in a state of disbelief. Regular park-goers described Sergeant Major Somchai as a man of good character who was always friendly and would often greet fellow joggers and walkers.

A poignant scene unfolded in the aftermath of the incident, as a white dog, which locals said was often fed treats by the deceased man, was seen lingering near the area, attempting to approach the body.
