A 22-year-old debt collector was shot and injured on a road in Trang Province after being mistakenly identified as a threat by a 63-year-old driver.

The incident occurred on the Trang–Nam Phut Road near the Tan Bak Intersection, Na Phla Subdistrict, Muang District, at around 18:30 on 2 September. Police were alerted and responded promptly, accompanied by local administrative officers.

The victim, identified as Mr. Natthawut Moolsingh, from Suphan Buri, was following a white saloon car on a motorcycle when he was shot. He sustained four gunshot wounds, two to his right calf and two to his left ankle and was taken to Trang Hospital by a local rescue team after seeking help at Rai Pru Temple.

The shooter, Mr. Jarunsak Sane, a resident of Na Phla Subdistrict, surrendered to police along with a .11 calibre Colt semi-automatic pistol, which was used in the incident. He explained that he had perceived the motorcyclists, who were wearing full-face helmets and balaclavas, as potential attackers due to their following behaviour and flashing indicators.

A friend of the victim, Mr. Sombun, told authorities that the pair had merely been returning home after a debt collection task and had no previous conflict with Mr. Jarunsak.

According to Mr. Jarunsak, he had left Rai Pru Temple with his son after attending a funeral. Noticing the motorcycle behind him repeatedly signalling in response to his indicator lights, he became suspicious that they were following him with malicious intent. When the motorcycle continued to follow him at a junction, he exited his car and fired in self-defence, he claimed.

Police have charged Mr. Jarunsak with attempted murder, unlawful possession of a firearm and carrying a firearm in public without authorisation. Investigators are continuing to collect evidence with the assistance of the Trang Provincial Forensic Police, as the investigation continues.
